Seat Time - Plowing by starlight

Just spent a mostly enjoyable 3+ hours running the two-bottom Dearborn plow through the corn stubble left over from last fall. Would have done it then, but I was a bit distracted from almost losing my hand to the corn picker.

The soil was just about perfect tonight. The only problems were the occasional clump of corn stalks that had to be cleared out of the plow, and a couple of frozen chunks of dirt that were big enough to stop the tractor cold.
So to speak.

I ran it in third using draft control. Set it up with the instructions posted on the board. Started about an hour before sunset, finished up after 10pm under a star-spangled sky.

Got off to a bit of a crooked start (was watching behind me too much):

Now I need to disc the whole field and then sow some alfalfa and oats...

I only did about 1.5 acres, and it seemed to take forever (at about 2-3 feet per pass)! I made all the passes the same direction since I never seem to get the middle furrow to line up right when I run both ways.

I'll see if I can scare up a photo to post...

Ed S,When I was a young boy I spent many a long day and half the night year after year turning over that rich black Illinois soil on my old 2N.And Dad on the big tractor plowing on a land. There aint no tellen how many acres that I have plowed on it.The fields were 1/4 mile long and it seems like it would take forever to plow out a land. But eventually I would get it done and move over to another land and start in again. We plowed 9"-10" deep and that old plow would do a really good level job.I can remember the shares shining like a mirror.I still have that plow but it hasn't shined quite like that in many years.Brings back memories!

Same here in Kansas. Did the plowing last fall. It was dry enough to get the spring tooth in the garden to finish busten it up. Had the finish in the dark, due to the tractor did not run right and had to tune her up first. Got the Potatos seed on the table and cuttin them up tonight. Going for Yukon Golds this year.

Lucky You!!!----I can almost smell that freshly turned ground up here in WI.

In about a month I will get to disking my corn stalks in and dropping the plow in the ground.
Can"t wait. Ground in still covered in snow up here with more expected tomorrow.

Tim

Well, you brought back some real good memories of when I was in high school (many years ago) and I would spend all Easter vacation plowing for my uncle. I used his Massey Harris 44 w/ 3x plow. I'd get on in the morning after we got barn chores done and plow straight through into the night. (I did stop for food occasionally.) But what a good time it was, out there in the night with the that Massey working perfectly. Great times!

It was really peaceful out there with my 9N and I. Third gear just whistling DIXIE. STarlite and Moonlite nite. COLD THOUGH.

Good for you!! So sorry to hear about your hand, but I am happy you attacked the corn field. I wish I had a plow for my N.

Proud of ya'...just be careful at night.
