Richard..... ..the early 6-volt 1-wire 3rd-brush 11-amp genny used on 9N's 2N's can eazily OPEN-CIRCUIT 17-volts. But once you LOAD the genny output with a battery it will settle down to about 7-1/2volts. That is nominal charging volts for a 6-volt genny. Its the LAW. Electro-chemical law. The 2-terminal roundcan cut-out under yer sheetmetal battery tray DOES NOT regulate the charging volts. It is YOU who regulate the charging volts by adjusting the 3rd-brush and watching yer ammeter. Normally, you'll adjust to see about 3-amps of charge (+) at 1/2-throttle. When yer runnin' headlites, you gotta UP the charge or you'll drain yer battery. And conversely, iff'n you don't reduce the charge when headlites OFF, you'll BOIL yer battery DRY and WARP the plates and KILL yer battery. So pay attention. And yes, RE-POLARIZE as many times and ennytime as it takes to make you feel warm and fuzzy, ya won't hurt 'nuttin'. I use a pair of pliers handles to "arc-spark" the 2-terminal roundcan cut-out together, engine OFF. You can use barbwire or bailin' wire iff'n you want. Yes, yer tractor came from the factory "POSITIVE GROUND". Thats the flatbraid connection to rustys sheetmetal bracket to battery PLUS (+) terminal. ..... .HTH, Dell
