Have this old 8N with a back hoe on it so I don't use it much. It has been parked out side now for at least a year and not started. Well I set a battery in it, 12 volts, drained the carb, it was full of water. Put gas in the tank and it fired right up. Ran about a minute and died. Checked for spark and had none so I cleaned the points and still no fire. Looked at the wires and found one at the ballast resister had come loose. Hooked it back up and it fired right up. I figured I would have to do a lot more to it to get it to run. Got to love these old tractors

Yep, they seem to handle neglect and abuse unbelievably well. Just goes to show you how well they were designed in the first place. Some of the nasty old junkers that I've resurrected with very little major work still amazes me.

Bad thing is with this 8N having that back hoe on it its squarrly you take off in any gear and no matter how slow you let the clutch out the front end jumps off the ground. And then when you drive it some place it feels like its sort of swaying side to side. Makes you feel like its going to lay over on it side. Can not say its one I like to drive much because it feels so funny when you do drive it. Also forget it has 4th gear because if you use 4th the front tires are off the ground more then one the ground. Every little bump the tires hit the front tires jump up

I don't usually watch cooking shows, but he does shows on things like smoking fish in a cardboard box and making jerky with a box fan. Kinda like "farmerizing" your kitchen.

We always rolled ours and smoked it in brown paper sacks, NO Wait, that was Rabbit Tobacco.

Thanks for the heads up on this guy, I'll have to check him out.

About once every 5 years I have a day like that. Last week the bearings went out in the alternator of my truck. Local store had an alternator in stock and a total of 25 minutes of wrenching and it was back on the road. Since I was on a roll I thought I would look into why my 91 corsica started hemoraging antifreeze. Turned out to be a $3.00 gasket. Another trip to town and 10 minutes later it was back on the road, too.

Projects like this are few and far between. Glad to hear you got it back without much trouble!

Joe

BTW - for anyone that's interested, I think Alton Brown is doing an epoisode on Okra tonight - 11:00p eastern on the food network.

I'll pretend this was an actual question and that I wasn't being mocked. Then everybody can say "what an idiot - he doesn't even know he's being mocked" :D
Alton Brown is the host of "Good Eats" a cooking show on the food network. I don't usually watch cooking shows, but he does shows on things like smoking fish in a cardboard box and making jerky with a box fan. Kinda like "farmerizing" your kitchen. He also uses a lot of hand and power tools in the kitchen. It's entertaining, and my wife and I have gotten a lot of good recipes from him. If he's doin something with Okra, it's probably good.

You will never catch me watching Oprah.

Happy Tractor'N
