Got to thinkin' about my 2N orig. gauge, not working, and decided to check it out.

No....I did not completely, tear it apart, so I do not know what is inside. But, It did not ever read beyond approx. 12-15 lbs. of pressure, prior to this cleaning. SO.. I fig., what the heck!!!

I first took a syrenge and filled the oriface with PB BLASTER,(did I say I love that stuff???) I let it cook in there for about an hour. Then turned it over and let it drain for awhile. Then took my rubber tipped air hose, and blew it out, w/ 10 lbs of air setting. I noticed that the gauge flutered, and when I pushed the air tip tightly on the oriface, walla!!! the gauge read exactly 10 lbs.

I then filled the oriface with light machine oil and worked it at,..10...20...30...40...and 60 lbs air pressure. The gauge never missed a mark. I went out early this morn., and install it on the "N", and started the engine. After about 30-40 sec., the gauge jumped up to 40 lbs. and stayed right there until the oil got warm. After approx. 25 min. the gauge had settled to approx 18 lbs., and stayed there for another 20-30 mins.

Was still working at shutdown !!!!! I'd say it is working good!!!!

Pix, are of after cleanup!!! :D

Try it, maybe you will get lucky, and save an old piece of an "N"

ENJOY!!!

Gary :D

Once upon a time you could send a SW gauge back to B repaired for free,,, if they could not fix it they would replace it for FREE,,, I have called them 'bout git'n a gauged fixed,,, they just sent me a new'n and told me to keep the old one,,, last time i had a SW gauge problem was in the late 80's so dunno how it works now...

I didn't even bother with getting hold of S-W. When I got the 2N that gauge was rusted so tight in the hole that It took a rubber malet, and about half an hour, to get it out. I fig. it would take more than I wanted to spend to get it replaced.

It works now so I'll just keep it for a spare.

Gary :)

I've done the same thing before but I used carb cleaner instead of PB. About 50% of the time they worked again.

Yeh Rich, I think anything with some cleaning power would do the trick.

But... not knowing what was/is on the inside of the gauge, I opted to use PB Blaster, due to the lubricating properties.

Any how ya fig. it, the gauge works now, and it didn't before. I think it was just dirt, and gunkie inside and the solvent helped break it loose. :D

Good work on repairing the guage, good info. However it is not an original to the 2N nor the 8N as the original would have not been an 80#er.

Thanks GP;

Bad wording on my part. This gauge is in fact, Not an original to any of the "N"'s. It was the orig. gauge on my 2N at the time of me buying it.

This gauge shown is actually a replacement gauge, Manufactured by "Stewart-Warner, part# 418796, Made in USA, BUT....The system of doing what I did to this gauge can be used on Original or any other oil pressure gauge.

I did not mean to imply that my gauge is an original to any "N"!!!

Thanks for posting my mistake in my posting!!

Good for you, Gary. I don't think there is anything wrong with 18 lbs oil pressure when hot though.

(With my opinion and $1.06, you can get a 16 ounce coffee at my local gas station, however)

Very cool, Gary! The conservationist in me (pocket book conservationist) is impressed. And your hot oil pressure reading sounds like you don't have anything to worry about in that department.

Gary:

You & I think alike, as do many of the guys on this forum. We all get such a kick out of reviving something that is headed to the landfill and retuning it to a useful life. That is true of N tractors as well as parts thereof. How did you get the gauge looking so new?

Dan;

You bet. I'd rather work on old /used stuff than go shopping for the new stuff!!!! 8)
Cleaning the gauge, was not hard, just time consummin'. I did the back with carb cleaner, then a dremmel with a cup wire wheel then coated it real good with machine oil. The front was in fair shape already, so I just used carb. cleaner, to get the paint broke loose, and then wiped it down real good with machine oil, then buffed it with a soft rag.

Simple enough for me !!!!! Turned out good, I think!!! 8)
Thanks

Gary :)

Thanks for the affirmative replies Guys.

If you are thinkin' that is low oil pressure.....you are prob. right, but my 2N is pretty worn, and in need of an overhaul, so.... I think that the oil pressure is doin' fair for the condition of the engine!!!!????

8Ner.... I had prev. checked all oil lines for leaks/and pressure, nothing found. I just think my engine is getting due for work. It still has plenty of power thou!!!! And starts every time, I need it to.!!! 8)
Thanks again. Hope this helps someone else too!!! :)

Mine will hang/catch at around 20 lbs.

A rap to the dash with the end of my pocket knife, and it will jump to 40.

I bought a brand new one, a couple of years back, still haven't put it on.

Gary--nice job and idea!!!

Did you happen to check the oil line to the gauge as well? I refurbished my 49 8N and had to replace the old oil line due to a crack in the line.

Oil pressure improved by almost 10lbs. with the new "clean" and "crack free" oil line.

Tim
