Howdy Y'all
You all seem to know somthing about everything so I will ask. I have a troy built roto tiller and they say for the gear oil to only use GL4 140 or 85w-140, i cant find GL4 anywhere but i can find GL5. Will this work. Any ideas.
Thanks

Tillers typically use a "worm gear" drive. Often, the wheel that it wears against is BRASS.

The severe-duty additive that makes GL-5 what it is is typically BAD for brass.

I WOULDN'T take the chance of using GL-5.

When I got mine, I tool it all to pieces, it had a lot of wear on it.

The shaft bearings that the worm shaft rides in had a lot of play in them.

They were destroying the brass gear on the tines.

I grinded down a big washer to make a shim, and tightened them up, it still works fine, years later.

9N again;

Go to NAPA, look on the shelf for NAPA part# 75-210!!! Gear oil, SAE 80w-85w-90.

On the back of the bottle it states..... API services...GL-5, GL-4, GL-3

This was recommend to me by my local Troy-built parts Dealer, and I have used this in my Troy-built "HORSE" tiller for yrs.

Comes in 1 quart bottles, easy to use, and even has a plastic pour-spout top on it.!!!

HTH

Gary :)

That's what I have in mine, Gary.

You be the judge:
API Gear Oil Service Designations (PDF)

To summarize those 12 pages the central difference between GL4 and GL5 service designation is that GL4 designation indicates a lubricant has anti-wear additives suitable for use with spiral bevel and hypoid gearsets operating under mild to moderate loads and speeds. GL5 designation indicates a lubricant with additional additives for use with spiral bevel and/or hypoid gearing operatiing under severe loads and at high speeds.
What's in your Troybilt ;-)

By the way that document is dated 1995 and notes that some test equipment needed to test for GL4 compliance is no longer available - perhaps why the designation is getting harder to find - manufacturer's are just skipping GL4 in favor of GL5.
