We have a 9N Ford and need new generator brushes. The generator is apparently an after-market replacement with a damaged tag that says either "Unit Parts" or "United Parts", and then some numbers. Does anyone know of a source of brushes for this generator?

Thanks-

You should have a 3 brush generator.Ford cars used the same brushes til 1938 39.You shouldnt have any trouble finding new brushes.I keep them on hand for repairs.Small brush goes on the adjustable brush holder.Make note before you remove old brushes and dont get rough tightening up brush screws.Brushes break easy. You may get a set with all large brushes.

UP was a popular remanufacturer of auto, truck, and tractor parts back in the 1950's and 1960's, and maybe before and after that. They would take the cores of parts such as generators, starters, distributors, water pumps, and brake shoes to name a few and rebuild them to new condition. They would rivet their tag on some items such as generators and starters.

As long as the correct generator for the application was installed, it is still an original Ford generator and will take the same brushes as the tractor originally did. Be aware that there were actually two generators used on the 9N. Very early 9N tractors had what is called the small generator where the generator body is roughly the same diameter as the pulley. The later, more common generators used on 9N/2N tractors had bodies noticably larger than the pulley. I believe the small style takes different brushes, but most likely yours is the larger size anyway, especially since it is a rebuilt UP unit and most small generators were replaced with the better larger generators.
