Steve..... ..FYI, I went out and measured the 3-point lower arm movement on my 8N and this is what I found out. All the way down, my lower arm ball is 10" above ground, all the way up my lower arm ball raises to 38" above ground for a total "lift" of 28".

From your basic description, the implecation is of "weak hydraulics". Assuming that your fluid level is up to the mark, you most likely have a blown gasket and/or warn hydraulic piston rings.

To try to determine which, you remove the round plate that holds the hydraulic dipstick. Then with the tractor running and PTO ingaged so the hydraulic pump is working. Shine a flashlight up into the housing and see if you can see any oil squirting anywhere.

Put nothing but a flashlight beam in that hole while the tractor is running. I don't know about you, but I like all my fingers attached (grin).

Hope this helps, "I am not a hydraulic's expert"..... .Dell

Steve,
Does your tractor have position control, i.e. a little lever under the seat? The 8N came out in 1947.

First a question: Without the brush hog attached, do the lift arms lift higher? If no, then try adjusting the quadrant control. Where the lever which makes the lift arms go up and down go into the tractor there are four bolts. Loosen those bolts and slide the whole assembly (forward I believe). If the arms do lift all the way up without the hog on then you may have hyd pump problems. Let us know what the situation is and we can continue if needed.

FYI
The control arm in the linkage, roughly pivots about a center point. The top connects to the quadrant and touch control lever, the bottom connects to the pump. In order to engage the input valve on the pump the bottom of the control arm moves forward toward the front of the tractor. Therefore the top, connected to the touch control lever, moves back toward the rear. Moving the quadrant toward the rear of the tractor will cause the intake valve on the pump to engage sooner, which is what I think you're saying to try.
Hope this helps,
Eric
