Adding a hydraulic remote on the 8n

Now that I have the carb problem figured out, it is time to move on to the next puzzle.

My new 3 point PTO powered cement mixer arrived today. In place of the third link, it uses a hydraulic cylinder to dump the mixer.

Is there an external port to get pressurized fluid to run a cylinder, or must one tie into the lift hydraulics internally?

Bruce, I wonder if you couldn't braze the flap shut on a check valve? Might not have to worry about hitting or damageing the handle that way.

Excellent idea! I thought about just taking the handle off, but it looks like the ball will come out w/ it. I'll wrap it real tight w/ wire until the next time I get it back in the garage.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate the photo.

For use with the cement mixer, the stock hydraulics on the tractor should suffice.
This mixer is gravity dump. A one way cylinder is used to return the tub to the mix position. So the PTO (and the mixer tub) will have to turn in order to lift the tub. But I do not think that will be a problem.

I intend to put an attachment point on the bottom of the mixer, in alignment with the lift pins, to hook the third link. This will lock the height of mixer in a position which can be adjusted with the third link. And will also give resistance against the lift arms so that the hydraulic pump will build pressure. That will make for a little cleaner set up than would chains.

My 8N has the three position third link attachment so I can use the bottom position hole for the third link to anchor the mixer. And I can use the top hole to attach the hydraulic dump cylinder.

If I understand the manner in which this hydraulic system works, I will not even need to run a return line. The fluid should flow backward through the test port when I open the valve on the hydraulic hose and lower the lift control lever.

This should be a piece of cake. I was afraid that it was going to be complicated.

I have a couple of A C 2 bottom spinner plows for use with the WD's and 45's. I converted one of them to standard three point and pulled two plows off of it so that I could use it as a one bottom with the 8N.
It really needs a two way cylinder added to spin it. Setting the tractor up for that will be a little bit more complicated.

No, that won't work; you can't use the top hole in the three position top link attachment. (see tip # 34, below) It will pull the guts out of the top cover!

You can rig it like corvetteguy sez, or you can get a front pump & have live hydraulics on the tractor permanently & not have to chain the lift arms down. Check out the link below. The pic above is how I plumbed it on my 1951 N to work the lift cylinders on the trip bucket of the Freeman Loader.

What does the valve do?

It keeps the two circuits isolated. It is always in the 'off' position. The plumbing to the loader cylinders comes off of the work port of the control valve. The 'out' hose from the control valve (the bottom pipe) goes into the test port. The valve serves no purpose other than to keep the two circuits apart. Using pipe & doing it this way was easier than having a bunch of hoses flapping around my feet. If a fitting was available that just served as a plug, I would have used that instead of the valve!

What kind of an adapter did you use to plumb the pipe threads to the test port?

The port is 1/2-20 UNF. An SAE ORB fitting works quite nicely. I have a couple that size on hand if you can't find one.

I'm a bit unfamiliar with the term "ORB". Could you explain?

I just left the fitting that was on the tractor when I got it. Zane ships one w/ the kit. If need be, you can make one from a 1/2-20 fine thread bolt, as the 1/2-20 straight thread fittings are hard to find.

If it is a single acting cylinder
you can use the "test port" to
direct fluid pressure to the cylinder.
HOWEVER...
You must have the PTO Turning.
You Must have the 3 point arms chained to the axle to get pressure out.

Will that work for you?
