That's a loaded question and know one answer will cover all gaskets, when I started out in the trade mechanics in the shop used aluminum paint or enny paint, permatex sealers of the paste and liquid type and 3M 8001 glue. It still to this day grips my arse to see some one use grease on a gasket I spec cuzz I wuz the one that had to do the warranty werk to replace it after it failed cuzz the grease made the gasket separate. NO GREASE ON CORKE UBDERSTAND. RTV gasket sealers have their place, their are different types of RTV sealers for different oils/grease/heat ranges sum good sum not. Pushed into a corner I would say the gray RTV suits most needs, or I would fight ya if you had a thought of take'n it away from me. hers a little run down on my experience Everyone will have hiz preference and its what werks fer them. Once upon a time we only had liquid sealers and they werked and still werk. Then came paste type sealers and they werk and still werk, then specialized sealers and they werk and still werk. I have all types in the shop and they all have one thing in common they must have a clean surface to bond to. I like the gray or black silicon for most applications. The blue izz still around but old technology and it never did like oil and the clear did not either ( I have been informed the new blue werks rite well) . One thing to consider izz does the gasket have enny thing to do with clearance as to how the part fits if so then a gasket izz needed to set the clearance. A oil pump cover needs the correct gasket to set the clearance so use a gasket. If no gasket izz required then the use of a sealer izz up to the installer.. Day to day I install, water pumps if they use a gasket I glue it to the pump with 3M 8001 yeller gorilla snot, and smear a lite coat of gray silicon to the face of the gasket that meets the block for insurance and iffin I replace the pump the gasket will not stick to the block . Sum pumps used today on newer cars don’t have a gasket and use silicon. If in a jam I would use silicon on a water pump if no gasket wuz on hand. If the pump cover were pitted I would use silicon to fill in the imperfections. On cork I only put sealer on the joints enny sealer added to the cork will make it slicker than snot on a door knob and cause the cork to squeezes out and break. Only glue cork to one surface (3M 8001) and seal the joints. If the cork does not seal of I don’t feel it will or I don’t want to take a chance I use gray silicon and no gasket. Everyone izz rite on what they told ya it werks fer them so you will have to try it. I have to warranty what I do so use what werks fer me and still git bit from time to time. there are 5 sealants that hang around my werk table all the time, #1) Permatex 599BR gray silicon, #2) Permatex High temp silicon, #3)Mopar AXLE -RTV, #4) Loctite 515 gasket eliminator (don’t use it much enny more) #5) Permatex aviation form a gasket, mite as well add copper coat that I use to use and now got back to use’in on some head gaskets. Sum brake clean to clean the surface a good razor blade in a tool holder to scrape with will git’er’ done. Clean bright and thigh applies her also.

Head bolt sealant… I have went back to Permatex aviation form-a-gasket cuzz I tried the Teflon thread sealant and a few head bolts leaked water,,, never had a leak with the Aviation form-a-gasket

Some times its trial and error ,,, this is what werks for me

Cork tips from another post

Do not put enny thing on cork that will make it slippery, The cork will squeeze out and break. Its ok to put silicon on joints but not on all the cork gasket. Copper coat would be ok but let it have sum time to git tacky before you install. I glue 1 side with 3M 8001 adhesive, seal joints with black or gray silicon. Reason I use 3M 8001 izz to hold the gasket in place during instillation, it also needs a few min. to set up and depends on temperature, hot it sets up fast cold may need 5 min to set up. It izz tempting to install with out adhesive and may werk with out enny problems were you are at cuzz the gasket does not werk in a environment were their are positive or negative presser like were gaskets have to live on a engine. Cork will live a long time if it izz not affected by heat. Were heat izz a problem I had rather use a good silicon. Make sure yet sealing surface izz flat and clean as possible.

Typically nothing on head gaskets. For most everthing else:

Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket #3

How about on Hydraulic Pumps? in reply to TheOldHokie, 04-01-2008 05:03:47
8Ns and the hundred series pumps have gaskets internal to the hydraulic pump. Do these hydraulic pump gaskets get any treatment, or slap 'em on bare?

I had to disassemble all parts and reassemble with grey (import) silicone. When the gaskets were assembled dry, they leaked incessently. The head gasket had to be coated with Permatex Copper Gasket spray. All gaskets were coated on both sides and installed when tacky. Engine kit was a Tisco. All engine surfaces were hot tanked or milled. Should have sealed, but it did not.

I would try assembling dry, but when that fails, go to the silicone. Not sure why the gray works so good, but it seems to work where others fail.

I guess no one agrees on anything. I put gasket sealer on everything including my false teeth. I have had lots of leaks on anything that touches water when I didn't use sealer.

Nothing on the head gasket. If you don't get the block deck surfaced - just use a soft composite head gasket and it will seal just fine. You must have never had to pry a head loose or scrape that crap off a block and head before. LOL Nothing either on cork gaskets (like oil pans). On gaskets that seal water (like water pump gaskets) I leave those dry too as the water will swell the gasket a tad and seal it off by itself. The only gaskets I use sealant on are the thin front cover and governor plate to engine gaskets - and I use the Permatex super tack spray on adhesive. Lightly coat both sides, let it dry to tacky - then install. I also will be trying the Permatex Ultra Copper high temp gasket sealant on my manifold to engine gaskets - Hobo highly recomends this as added protection and extra sealing power.

Dan

On only the head or on valve-cover/oil pan etc?

I'd recommend Copper Coat , there's original K&W Name Brand copper coat and Permatex makes a Copper Spray-A-Gasket. Both work but I recommend the K&W as it is thicker and stickier. I have used it on cork gaskets and it makes them reuseable.I have an aversion to silicone and only use it when necessary.
