I have a 1947 9N, lots of oil in coolant. Pulled head, head gasket appears intact. What are the other potential problems?

Richard,

I had the same problem with my '49 8N...that is if you really have a lot of oil in the coolant. I'm talkin' about sludge that keeps coming back no matter how many times you flush it. I took my water pump off and found a chunk of cylindar bore cast iron broke off. The chunk was about 1.5" by 1.0" but did not extend up to the deck where the sleave lip rests. I am thinking this was the cause although I am not sure. I have heard that if you have good sleeves, gasket and a flat head, that you do not even need a cylinder bore.

Does anybody out there know this for sure...because I would love to just put in new sleeves, gasket and flat head and not trash my block?...thm

Sears..... ..according to Hakeem's Razor, ittz'chur HEADGASKET.

Seriously, there are NO OIL passages thru the flathead so the usually cause for floating oil sheen is leaky headgasket caused by normal engine compression.

Howsomevers, there are plenty of radiator additives that will give an oily sheen floating on top of yer anti-freeze. Including the fact, that anti-freeze also includes waterpump oil. You doubt? Read the lable.

Too bad you pulled yer cylinderhead BEFORE you did the dreaded compression test. (Ford specs: 90psi min) That is the ONLY WAY to verfy leaky headgasket. So now BYTE the BULLET. Check the cylinderhead for flatness and iff'n warped, have it milled 1-time only. You don't know how to check for warped cylinder head? Yer machineshop does and its usually "free"..... ....Dell
