I replaced the starter ring on the flywheel and it worked for a short time, now it's slipping. Not sure if a new ring will fix the slipping problem. Has any one seen this problem before and can one spot weld the ring as a fix. Thank you for any help.

If your ring gear is slipping on the flywheel you"ll need to have a good repair on it because the welds will be taking all the starter torque.

My TO-30 had a "tack welded" ring gear and, due to the original design flaw on the flywheel,when the welds broke, my ring gear came off and jammed between the flywheel and bell housing. Whoever put it in must not have realized that the flywheel was cast. When the welds broke they took chunks out of the flywheel. I"d consider tack welding, at best, a temporary fix that, according to Murphy"s Law, will fail at the most inopportune time. Based on my experience, I"d recommend you pull the flywheel and get it fixed correctly.

Thanks for the heads up Jerry. I had the tractor split open last nite, and did not think a new ring whould fixs the slipping. So. I had 4ea 1" tack welds applied. The tractor is back together , and is working for now. Till old Murphy shows up. I mite be looking for a new flywheel in the near future. thanks everyone for all the info....

Flywheel = cast iron

Ring gear = steel

To make a REAL weld between them would require the flywheel to be pre-heated, and the use of nickel rod.

Just using a mild steel rod through the starter hole is a crapshoot.

SOMETIMES, the weld will tear off a bit of cast iron, and the ring gear will be loose again. Have seen that more than once over the years.

But, if it works, it SURE beats splitting the tractor!

My 8N starter ring has been spot welded in about 4 places. A good welder can spot weld the starter ring through the starter hole, which would be a lot easier than breaking the tractor down.

Mine was tack welded in about 4 places when it was replaced a couple of years back.
