The axel is done on the Beast! While we were waiting for parts, we had the radiator reconditioned, painted the axel, fan and radiator shroud. All of the parts fit real nice and tight. We had to press the axel bushing in but it didn’t take too much force to get in. The pin only needed a small amount of “encouragement” from the BFH.

Here is a picture of the finished product:

I replaced the axel bolts and the drag link bolts. I had to drive the axel bolts and one of the draglink bolts out with a BFH because they were so galled:

The steering is tighter than before, but it never did cause me any problems I just wanted it to be good as new and after I saw the condition of the worn bushing, pin and bolts, I feel a lot safer with all the new parts.

GB in MT is to blame for this project. He & Hermie started this with the story about the condition of Hermies axel. Mine was a piece of cake compared to Gary’s as the Beast didn’t have any cracks in the axel and only the bushing and bolts were worn, no welding needed.

Looks good Dan!

I like the color, I had considered it for my 42 but did not do it.

When I took my front end apart I had to use the same kind of hammer you did :-)

Lumpy:

The radius rod bolts were ordered from just 8N's. They were exact replacements as to diameter, but were a bit long. If I were to be a perfectionist, I would cut them off. They cost $3.50 for the pair plus shipping.

I had to buy 4 new bolts that hold the axel "halves" together. They are 5/8-18 x 2 3/4" long. If you put a bumper on, you need 2 of them about 3 1/2" long. Any way, they were $10.00 each!

Dan, I am in the process of doing the same thing to my 2n. I'll post some pics. Did you get new replacement bolts for the 1 pictured? Were they exact replacements? I had to order mine from Fastenal, because I wanted exact replacements... I will have to pay cash for that one so the wife doesn't complain about the $$$$. They were REALLY expensive!

Gary:

Thanks for the comments. The Beast is running and driving more & more like he is supposed to, once he stops peeing fluids on the floor, he will get the moniker removed from his nose.

When you get the old drag link bolts out, send or post pictures, I’ll bet they have noticeable wear.

Thanks Dunk.
Just a few more small projects like this one & the Beast will have the front emblem replaced with a "Ford" one.
