OT 78 Monte Carlo Alternator

Need my memory refreshed. Here is what I currently have: 12 volts to the BAT terminal (wire burned from the solenoid to alternator, replaced and now have voltage). No juice to the ignition switch. If I bypass the alternator by jumping from the BAT to the #2 terminal (large red wire), everything works. Is there something internal to the alternator bad, or am I missing a step somewhere?

Thanks for any help. Driving me nuts!

Based on your guys information, I have wired around what I think is a junction inside the harness somewhere, and everything is as it should be. May not be pretty, but functional. The car will be 30 years old next week, glad to have it going.

Thanks for the advice,guys. have been looking for an in-line fuse, haven't found it yet. Is there any problem with jumpering the #2 post to the BAT post, like in a 12V conversion?

In your case, where the connection of BATTERY to Alt BATT terminal is apparently compromised, I would say yes there is a problem.. That being that the #2 sense line was not designed to carry the charging current & the full loads of everything on the car. If you do that, I predict that soon you will have a fire.

The fusible link is just a special short lengh of wire spliced into the car's wiring harness.

Some of these old cars had fusable links.

You say wire burned from alternator to solenoid????? ???? What wire? Battery cable should be hot wire to solenoid. Accessory wire that attaches same place as the battery cable should not go straight to the alternator I don't think? Should go into wiring harness somewhere and then connect to the alternator hot wire. Alternator wire should be hot all the time battery is connected.

Look for fusable link in hot wire from accessory wire comeing from the starter solenoid.

9N 89716,The large 10ga wire(red0 that hooks to the alternator should be hot 12v. all the time.Also there should be a 10ga wire (red) that hooks to the battery + cable @ the battery or large battery side post at the starter solenoid that feeds power to the ignition switch and fuse panel.

When you put your jumper from ALT's BATT to ALT's #2 terminal, you are running everything thru thr SENSE wire...not good. Thre is probably a fusible link between ALT's BATT terminal & the BATTERY & that link is probably blown. Pull the wire off the ALT BATT terminal and connect a load (headlight or something that will draw current) and see if you have power. If not, search for that fusible link. I say a load, because simply measuring for volts may not tell you much, because even burnt insulation (carbon ) will conduct voltage enough to read on a high impedance volt meter.

Had the alternator checked at Autozone, they say it is fine. It is a 10-SI.
