Can the oil-pan come off w/o "splitting" the tractor?

Not without the midsection being supported. Just put something in under the tranny & frontend for support, don't worry with the rears.

No you need a support under the transmission. The front of the pan bolts to the front axle. When you take those bolts out the front axle no longer provides any support. It is better to block the back wheels, front and back, use wood blocks to build a support under the transmission and then remove the front axle before pulling the pan. This will give you more room to work on the engine.

Just make sure that you have the front of the tractor and mid section raised and supported. I know from first hand experience that the oil pan is part of the tractor frame and helps to support it. I tried to take mine off without any support and cracked my timing gear cover....still trying to get everything back together.
