i'm currently using a 55 gal barrel 1/2 full of gravel.
Normally use the 1,500# Backhoe, but also have used the 1,500# counter weight off of a TD-9 Loader.

Fill em with something to keep them from freezing. IE.. add Windshiled washer fluid and water ( winter mix ).. or CACL and water.. or antifreeze and water. Depending on your tire size.. you can get a decent amount of weight. However.. to counterballance a loader.. weight behind the rear axle is where it is at. Some people tote a big heavy box blade.. others like myself make a ballast box. i made a tub of concrete with a drawbar bolted to the bottom, and some scrap metal sticking up for a toplink connection. cost me about 15$ and some scrap parts. I have one on my tractors with FEL..

Fluid fill yes water filled big problems in the winter and destroying tires and tube. My self I use wiper fluid instead of CACL because it will not cause the rims to rust if you get a leak. Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a page from a 1935 JD-B manual that tells you how to fill them
