Part of the weight of the mower should be on the rear wheel. Most mowers have a top link connection that "flexes" over a limited range to allow this, but will not allow the mower to flip up and over on the operator.

In addition to what the other said I learned from this forum to use limiter chains. Set the chains so they will take the weight of the brushhog at your desired height. This lets the weight off your hydraulics while cutting.

R.G.M.,The back of your cutter should always be higher than the front.Otherwise the blades are cutting the grass, weeds twice, thus it takes twice the power. The rear wheel should be on the ground and adjust it so the back is higher. The front highth can be adjusted with chains from the top link at the tractor to both of the bottom links at the cutter.

On my 8N, and 5' bush hog.

I always, for over 20 years, ran the front skids of my bushog on the ground, with the back around 6" or more higher with the pivot wheel, I ran stay bars, I kept 3/8" thick skids welded on mine, quite a bit wider, and longer, than what it came with. I would adjust my top link, on my lift, to where if the rear wheel was on a rise, it would lift the bushhog.

This was all done in position control setting. (I know the 9N doesn't have that, but I'm not convinced it won't still work).

Then in thick stuff, I may have to raise it with the lift, and run over the big stuff, the first round or two. Or only take a half, or 1/4 cut a round.

I have NO 9N experience though.

But a 42" I would think would be a piece of cake to pull.

When you have the mower adjusted correctly, ( see your manual if you have one )the front is lower than the back, and the skid rails on the side walls should be up 2-3" off the ground at the front, so the tail wheel does support the back half on your typical rotary cutter. They work so much better when adjusted properly and you have sharp or new blades. Good to keep the tail wheel axle shaft greased and the spindle greased.
