QUESTION - Use sealer with diff case gaskets?

I should be ready to start bolting the rear end back together in a few days, and was wondering what the consensus is on using Formagasket or similar sealer along with the gaskets (thinking the ones between the trumpets and diff case at this point, but opinions on the others are welcome, too).

The originals had no sealer.

Also - it looks like no-one carries the old metal shims anymore, so I bought a bag of the replacement part paper shims and will guesstimate how many I need to replace the old ones (which were in several pieces when I pulled the axles out).

Ed..... ..NO SEAL, just swipe yer BIG paper trumpet gasket with HOT water so it'll fit over studs. Simple, eh?

Yeah, them metal shims self-destruct. Just follow FO-4 procedure for clearance. Remember, too loose is better'n too tite..... ..Dell

Whe I had the axle apart on my 2n last fall I coated all of the gaskets with gasket shellac. It"s a very thin seal and doesn"t affect the preload settings much. I"ve used shellac for years on engine gaskets, the stuff works great. Only downside is it"s a pain to remove later down the road if you need to dissassemble something again.

Remember, you are setting bearing preload with those gaskets.. form a gunk makes that a little harder..
