I'm looking for a Sherman 3 speed to fit my 8n. I have been told the input shaft is longer for shermans used in NAA's and later Fords. How can I be sure that I am looking at the shorter 8n version. Can anyone tell me a correct measurement that I can check to be sure I am getting a Sherman to fit an 8n?

Rich,

ALL of the Sherman Combos you find out there that have the coarse/10 spline input shaft will fit in your 8N OR the NAA's. Only a VERY few of the early Step-up/Overdrive only Shermans had the straight-cut output shaft. None of the Combos ever did. Even the earliest 100's that still used the coarse clutch will take the same Combos. Also, the later/15 splined Combos can be converted over to fit the 8N in about 5 minutes by swapping the entire front 'nose'/input assembly. I have a Sherman Combo when you're ready.
HTH,
jim

Rich,

Just installed 3 speed combo Sherman in my'49 8N, so went out and measured transmission input shaft I took out. Overall length is 16 7/8", input shaft housing (Sherman case will be the same) is 13". HTH

Rich..... ....welp, according to my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) the helix geared tranny input shaft; p/n: 2N-7017A fits 9N's, 2N's, 8N's, NAA's 1939-1954. It use a 10-tooth clutch hub. That tells me ALL the N's use the same inputshaft and 4-bolt carrier. ALL Shermans are helix geared. Some early 9N's were noisy straight-cut geared and will NOT fit a Sherman.

I don't know about the 100-series (600, 700, 800, 900) input shaft but I think they all used a 15-tooth clutch spline. and may indeed be LONGER. (thats 2-hands and 1-foot for the digitally challenged) ..... ...Dell
