Nothing quite as much fun as putting the springs back on. Took it apart because the the forward bushing was sliding out the front. Found out why it was a 2 piece bushing...LOL

Put the new one piece bushing back in. Under cut the mica on the armature and put it back together, It was in pretty good shap. Brushes are a bit wore but I am not going to replace them now..

Thank, goodness, Gary!!

The tomato and pepper plants here are about 8" tall in the garden, and they are calling for 35* Sunday or Monday night, We may have to cover them with something.

I sure hope they change that fore then.

It is NOT necessary to "undercut" the mica between the bars in starter commutators, only GENERATOR commutators.

Seriuously, this is TRUE!

Good job, a LOT of pharting around. I'm too lazy for any of that. We have a local guy that will do the job, he rebuilt the starter for my JD a few years ago, but he's 35 mi. away , so I opted for "get a new one". As it turns out (according to the local guys price) I saved $40.00 + $20.00 in FUEL !!!!

LMAO Dunk; If it was full of bottles and the bottles were full of beer, then I would take you up on that, but then I'd still have to find a box for the doglegs.LOL

ODD size 2ftx2ftx4inches. I got three stores in town looking for me. If not around here I'll run in to Missoula, and get one at the UPS store.

Guess I'll be sending them through the Post Office serv. UPS wants too much for my blood.

Gary

Bend a "hook" on the end that will catch the brush.

Should read that will hook the spring.

Small stiff steel wire.

Bend a "hook" on the end that will catch the brush.

Then pull it up and form it on the outside of the starter, to where it holds the spring up.

Or just move the spring to the outside of the brush hole, and put it together, then put the brushes in the holes, and then use the stiff wire to hook the sprngs and pull them up into position.

Sean:

Looks like you are really going through Fred with a fine tooth comb. Good work!

Keep the updates coming, I like to see the old iron put back in service.
