Anyone got a tip on reinstalling one? I was doing the valve un-stick procedure(successfully) and one came off. Looks like a "C" w/a tab sticking out.

OK...I found out what the caused the thing to come out...

The valve seized into the guide in the open position. So the spring was stuck in a compressed position. Once I pushed it back down(w/lots of lube) - the retainer ring dropped below the position needed to hold it in.
I was trying to figure out if the spring was broken or what and the whole assembly popped out the top.

I took it apart on my workbench and "gently" got the valve stem out of the guide. Cleaned the stem and "bore" of the guide w/brass bristle implements.
Lubed it all and confirmed it slid freely in the guide before reassembling and reinstalling.

No problem....I've learned more about the valves today that all the reading I've done up to now. hands-on is important !

nondem;

Ya did good, man. I would say you were lucky to find that out, the way ya did. GOOD work. 8)
You did all that, first time, and did not do any damage, cleaned up the problem, and now you know more than ya did!!!!! I will say that was a profortable valve cleaning.

Just make sure that, that particular valve stem is not bent.(work it up and down to check it) Then put it all back together, and turn the engine over, (key switch off) with the starter. That will insure that that valve is going to work properly, and that it will not bind up on you when you start the engine.
(I'm just a little over cautious, when it comes to valves, and $$$$$.) :lol:

When ya get it running, report back on how it went.

Good job!!!!!

Gary :D

nondem;

Did you get the "c" clip re-positioned on the valve guide. I would appreciate a feedback on this, otherwise I am just going to assume you don't need any more help with it.!!!!! !

Hope you got it back on there!!!! But if you didn't, DON'T run that engine with it off, or you are going to create your self, a whole new bag of worm's.

Just trying to help ya.!!!!

Gary :!: :?: :!: :roll:

I am guessing that you are talking about the retainer that goes on above the top of the spring. It fits in a grove at the top of the valve guide above the spring. If it came out then some how you must get the guide down far enough to get the clip in. If you have the exhaust/intake manifold off you can stick a screw driver in the exhaust/intake port and pry down on the top of the valve guide so the grove is exposed. If not you have to some how pry down the spring/guide assembly from the outside to expose the grove. Make sure the "C" part of the retainer is not bent and sets properly back in the grove.

Well, at least you must have read the caution on my instructions, about loosing the bottom retainer. So, what do you do????? You knock the TOP spring retainer off!!!!! :lol: :lol:
Go to page 113, In the back of your FO4 manual and at the top of the right side of the picture there, You will find out where that retainer goes into the slot at the top of the valve spring. What you need to do is get the spring down out of the area of that slot and with a pair of very small vice grips, stick the clip in that slot and release the spring.
Good luck..... It is a lot of fun, and ya almost need three hands!!!!! :lol:
And DON'T loose that clip!!!!! !!!
