I bought a new 6v battery from tractor supply today. Fits like a glove.
I wanted to top it off cuz it's been sitting on the shelf for 2-3 months but my charger only does 6v in manual 6amp mode.

What is the actual voltage I should see from the battery if it's fully charged?

12v batteries generally do 13+ , should I expect 7ish from a fresh 6v?

I don't have one of those nifty load-testers.
I used it to turn over my headless(no compression) 8n just to see and it was awful slow. I know that I'm used to 12v stuff and 6v is slow when compared...but It's late an I can't think of anything else to be worried about till I put the tractor back together tommorow and try to start it.

You say,"I wanted to top it off cuz it's been sitting on the shelf for 2-3 months but my charger only does 6v in manual 6amp mode. "

Is that what it says on the label?

Is that what you measure with your meter?

Typical meters are 'average responding, rms calibrated meters. If you have a high dollar meter, you have more options, such as true rms, true average, peak, etc.

Your battery charger puts out a rectified sine wave and your meter tells you the rms value of it. The peak voltage is 41.4% higher than that. The peaks occur periodically (every 0.0083 seconds) and give your battery a shot of current.

When you meter tells you it is 6v, then the peak is actually 8.5volts and as such is capable of charging your battery up to just about 8.5v.

In a nut shell, your charger should be able to "top off" your battery just fine.

Make sure the starter body to tractor body makes good electrical connection - no rust, paint, etc., this is the starter"s ground. 1/0 gauge battery cables, MINIMUM - I have to buy them online since my local TSC and auto parts stores only carry 1 gauge. Ground braid from battery should be connected to solid chassis, not sheet metal. Make sure to clean and tighten all electrical connnections. Since the battery has been replaced, it is a good idea to re-polarize the generator to make sure it is charging the battery correctly.

HTH,
Mike

A full charged 6 volt battery should read around 6.3-6.5 volts and a full, not over charged 12 volt battery should read about 12.3-12.5. If over charged it could read 13 volts, that or your meter is off a little bit

My goodness..

A hydrometer (sp?) to check the specific gravity... err... layman's terms the charge of the battery, is around $3.60 at Wally World.
