In another post regarding carbon build up, I see Hobo has a link to a “reading spark plugs” article. I recently helped my neighbor out with his IH 540 that was running on 3 cylinders. When I pulled the plugs, this is what I found:

Hobo; can you tell me what is going on here? It kina looks to me like #2 (from the left) might be the problem.

Does look like no.2 might be a problem. My really,REALLY old Champion full color chart doesn't match to many things any more. Lack of lead in gas???

The other three plugs look like they are either running hot(too hot of a plug), the mixture is too lean or the timing a bit over advanced.

Hi Jerry;

I think you are close to being right. Those three look like running too lean or bad gas, and the really fowled one is bad/stuck ring or valve stuck open. Maybe even both on that one.!!!

So, would the ATF soak help the oil rings? the tractor doesn't smoke at all so I thought oil burning was not the issue. Also, will hotter plugs keep them clean?

My guess is bad rings or valve guides on #2. A hotter plug is a temp fix.

Unfortunately, that's what #4 looked like in my 8n when I bought it. Ran a lot better after I put in new AL 437 plugs. It still fouls that one after working it hard, though. I haven't let it get that bad again, though.
