I had to mount a new ring gear on this BBC truck engine flywheel. I have a range in the shop just for the purpose of heating ring gears so they'll drop in place on the flywheel.

HOWEVER, I haven't used it for a while, and it would take some serious cleaning up of the back of the shop to even get to it, so I took advantage of SWMBO being at work this morning, and used hers!

Her oven mitts worked well, too.

Now, I just have to bribe the 8-y-o not to tell her!

Ya know, If you stuck the flywheel in the freezer, it would have even been easier. ;-)

Actually, the flywheel was in the back of my pickup overnight @ about 30º, and I DID then toss it in the freezer for about an hour.

I took it out of the freezer just before I took the ring gear out of the oven, and dropped it into place. Every little bit of expansion/contraction helps.

Yup. I've heated the ring-gear to 350F and chilled the flywheel in the freezer, then it dropped right into place. Didn't even need to hit it with the brass mallet.... (but did so anyway to insure it seated.)

In the long run it may turn out to have been cheaper to pay the 8yo to dig out yours and clean it up. There are some things that Kids NEVER forget....You could be paying for years on this one..
