Or anyone else who has replaced a starter on one.

Mark, you helped me with the ECM on this critter back in December. I made a half hearted attempt to remove the starter yesterday, but I couldn't readily tell what bolts to remove (dark & dirty up in there). I didn't identify any flange bolts as in old chevys, fords, etc. and was wondering if it might be mounted by thru bolts like N tractors?

Apologize to all you other N folk, but didn't expect Mark to see it if I posted elsewhere.

JMOR, Hey yeh I'm here but been buisy. Yeh, I have done it a few times on my two wheel drive unit. Easy on two wheel drives. I always run it up on ramps to get at the starter from underneath. Being that you are having some troubles I have to suspect yours is four wheel drive and you have the original skidplate under there. I think you may have to remove the skidplate maybe. And remove the front drive shaft. Then you should be seeing the starter tucked up under there. The bottom bolt is easy but if I remember right the top bolt had to get to with a six inch or so extension. The bolts did have a beefy shoulder on them with like a 12 or 13 millimeter bolt head. With grease and some mud you might not be able to see that they are bolt heads. I'm going out to my place out in the country tomarrow/Monday afternoon and I have a four wheel drive one there, I'll crawl under and look at. I will have better info for you then. I have three of these things and it never stops amazing me what these things will go through. One thing I have found out though, high water and tracker starters are a No No. The selinoids go out way before the starter does. I have taken the selinoids apart and cleaned the one main contact inside and fixed em. That large contact gets corroded and the starter will just give you a "click" "click" sound. That sound is the starter engaging the flywheel but the corroded contact prevents it from getting it's needed juice. Anyway, I'm almost sure you gonna have to remove your front drive shaft to get to this thing. I'll get back to you tomarrow with some better info on the four wheel drive ones. The two wheel drive ones are very easy from underneath.

Mark...

On Toyota's that give contact problems I use a Ford starter solenoid to supply Battery voltage to the signal wire to the starter,,, never had one come back click'n

Found this out on my own,,, bout wore the starter bolts out replacing contacts
