I have been trying to help my mechanically challenged neighbor get his IH 544 running right. After a number of tries, I am starting to feel mechanically challenged too.

So far, I have replaced the plugs, points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap and wires. Yesterday, I took the carburetor apart & cleaned it out. When I first did the tune up last month, the plugs I replaced were pretty bad & one was even mounded over with carbon. The tractor was running on 3 of the 4 cylinders.

Now it runs great when cold with plenty of power and very smooth. Once it warms up, it sputters, backfires, looses power and won’t idle. The plugs are new as of a month ago (Champion D-21). Any suggestions as to what else to try would be greatly appreciated.

Follow up on the resolution to this problem:

It turns out that when I tuned up the ignition points, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, the parts kid at Car Quest sold me the wrong rotor. It had a flat top without the little spring clip that keeps contact with the center coil terminal. The flat one worked when cold, but once it heated up, it lost a good contact with the center terminal and started to sputter. I finally found a guy that was willing to do a small amount of research & come up with the right coil. The old 544 runs real smooth now even after getting warmed up and the temp. gauge at normal range. Thanks guys for the suggestions and input. This forum is priceless.

Den:

Yes, it does have that solenoid in the bottom of the carb. I was wondering about that because it also does not have a main fuel mixture adjustment on the carb loke the ford, just a low speed mixture adjustment. Can that solenoid be replaced? where can I find one? The tractor does run a bit better when the choke is out about 1/4 of the way after it warms up & it runs fine cold.

Dan,Does that carb have a little solenoid at the bottom of the carburetor?(fuel shutdown) I know that the 574 has and that will cause the problem that you are having.

When it sputters.. does choking it slightly help?

when it stalls.. pull a plug and check spark immediatly.

also check carb bowl for fuel immediatly.

post back results

You don't say how long it runs good but here are my ideas. Kind of sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch or possibly coil. Maybe running out of fuel. I'd try jumping the ignition switch when it starts that and see if that makes any difference. Next I'd check fuel flow at the carb bowl drain if it has one or the fuel line to the carb. I don't know what coil it has but if you could substitute a known good one that may help. Good Luck, Lee
