That's almost like asking "Which is better, Ford or Chevy?". It's not so much a matter of the distributor location being "better" as it is other components of the tractor that factor into a buying decision. I have 3 N's; one frontmount & 2 sidemounts. It is nice, w/ my eyesight, to have that front distributor on the work bench, w/ good light & a magnifying glass if need be, to set the points. That is a lot easier than bending over the sidemounts & loosing a screw in the distributor! The time it takes to remove the distributor from the tractor to work on it is offset by the the ease of working on it on the bench. The downside of the front distributor is the coil/distributor cap arrangement that requires some precision in getting it reinstalled correctly. I just put it all back as a unit & don't have any problems. The frontmount coils are not as robust as the round coils, but I have one w/ the Ford logo on it, so it's at least 25 years old.
