Starting 8N Restoration

I recently bought my first Ford tractor and have started the disassembly. I will have a lot of questions as I progress so I appreciate any help that is offered. I have two questions to start: 1. It appears to have had it's engine replaced by one from a 9N. Are specs (and parts) the same for this engine as for the 8N? 2. The pin where the three-point arm attaches to the differential housing is turning when I try to remove the nut. Is it pressed in; what should I do?

Thanks,
Richard

I had to tighten my left pin, and pulled the trumpet to do it. I've also read where someone pulled the PTO shaft out the back and was able to reach in through the resulting hole to tighten.

Another photo for you - pin with castle nut is at 7 o'clock from the axle shaft:

The differential is heavy, but manageable to remove - it just slides off the axle shaft (only out the left side, tho).

Clean out your sump while you're in there.

Don't forget, the gaskets won't fit till you wet them a tad with water.

(Thanks, Dell)

I pulled both trumpets on mine, and left the HEAVY chunk sitting where it was when I replaced both of my lower lift pins after breaking the well worn right one.

I don't think my back would have handled the weight of the chunk very well, and I don't have a cherry picker.

Congradulations, I am not far ahead of you. I have mine partcially disassembled getting ready to paint. Best advice I can give you is to buy a IT shop manual FO-4. They are well worth the money. Also, take a camera and take some pictures so you will remember how everything came off or where it goes when you start putting it back together. My biggest decision right now is determining which color of gray and red I want to paint. Mine is going to be a working tractor but I want it to look good at the same time. Hope you enjoy the project.

Hey, congratulations on being a new owner of a great little tractor . Apparantly the engine switch is the same becuae I've read of others doing it except they put 8n engines in 9ns . I had a 9n with an 8n engine in it . About the lift arm bolt turning , you'll have to pull the left rear trumpet off & get in there with a socket to tighten it or else replace it . They say its not possible to get at either side by removing the right trumpet . So again block the tractor up safely & remove the trumpet on the left side . There's another site devoted to Ntractors if you're interested in checking it out .I've gotten alot of help from those guys . So , hey check it out . If you send me your email address I can give you the website . Can't do it here because their filter kicks it out . Oh yea , ya wanna take pics of any repairs & restorations you do on your N . Also draw pics with notes for a reference . You'll be glad you did . HTH ! God bless , Ken

Thanks. Ken, my loose one is on the right side, so should I just pull the right trumpet?

No Richard , pull the left trumpet only for both bolts . What they are is a double threaded bolt that is inserted into the housing with a seal, washer & nut on the inside . Either that seal has deteriated or the nut has just loosened . Or , worse cenario , it could be the bolt is worn out . HTH ! God bless, Ken

Do you have to remove the differential? Is that difficult?

you can get in there without pulling diffy. the lower link pin castle nutt is low enough, just take your time. once you have the trumpet apart from tractor you can see what needs to be done.
