Looking at an old Jeep has an F head engine. Can someone explain what this is? Thanks Joe

As I recall.....it was a cross between a flat head & OHV engine; the intake valves were in the head, like an OVH engine, but the exhaust valves were in the block like a flathead. Sorta like the engineers couldn't make up their mind: overhead or flathead, which is better? OK, lets do it both ways!

Yeah, "F"-Heads. Carb intake was on other side of engine exhaust so it was a semi-flowthru design. Not surprizingly enuff, "F"-Heads weren't very efficient but were "cheaper" to manufacture than OHV's, and made for interesting "salesmen's braggin' rights". ..... .Dell
