I have read several post where people recommend using oven cleaner to clean tractor befoe painting. My question is, how long should you leave it on before washing it off.

Thanks,
Oscar

I always tried to do 'em twice, Gary.

Seems these days....

third party image I'm not as good as I once was...

I may still be as good once, as I ever was.

Add lye to water, never water to lye. You're right paul, water to lye will make it spit, or jump. Always wear goggles and rubber gloves, and if you get it on you, wash it right away. It won't burn on the skin for 30 to 60 seconds, but by then the damage is already done. You'll end up with a burn thats a lot like a hot oil burn. If it gets in your eye, and it isn't rinsed out immediately, severe damage, up to blindness, can occur. If you get it in both eyes, and no one is around to help you, you're screwed. A sodium hydroxide solution on your fingers will feel slippery, it doesn't burn on calloused skin right away, its decieving, but dangerous. I work with it, and it's easy to get lax-a-daisy with it, but don't. Goggles and gloves on before you start, and don' take them off until gloves rinsed and work done.

Oscar;

I used Oven Off to strip my 2N, last year. The way that works the best...JMO, is to spray it on real heavy and let it set overnight. In the morning, I spayed it heavy again, and about noon that day, I used a 2500 PSI, power washer to wash it off. Some places on the "N", had 2 and 3 coats of old paint, and grease on it.
I had no prob. with taking all that off, down to the bare metal. I did this "N", in three stages, starting from the rear and working forward.
This pic. shows the engine area, not completed, and is still down to bare metal.

For the na-sayers..... ..It worked for me. Here is the proof!!!
$1.00 a can, Oven Off, at the dollar store, a good scraper, and some elbo grease,..... .works wonders!!!

HTH

Gary :)

Dave;

I think I had the wife get me 10 cans. Then I bought 2 more cans. All total I used 11 1/2 cans. That was first and second coat on the three stage cleaning. I prob. could have done it with 10 cans, but the engine had a lot of greasy globs on it, so I did it twice. Especially around the front in all the nooks and crannies.

Why not make your own paint stripper ? Here's what ya need : one can of Red Devil Lye , Corn Starch , Rubber gloves & a China Bristle brush because ( it'll eat nylon bristles ). Get your self a nice sized plastic bottle with a lid . Now don't mix too much at once until you see how it's done . Now put some Lye in the bottle , pour in some warm water & mix it up . Next put a little corn starch in & mix again until it forms a gravy like texture . You want it to be able to brush on & stick . Now , brush some on an area & let it sit for a while until you start seeing the piant discolor or loosen . Now hose it off with pressure . If possible use hot water . Be sure to wear goggles & rubber gloves . If you get any on your skin or in your eyes , man wash it off quick . It'll peel skin also . Just keep repeating the process until your satisfied with the results . HTH ! God bless, Ken

Ken,

I am trying to remember my chemistry which I was never too good at (maybe Paladin will come to our aid here). Anyhow, I think that putting the lye in the bottle and THEN pouring some water on it can be disastrous. I think it will boil and spit and probably splash the lye up into someone's face. I think the safer way to do this mix is to put the water in the bottle first, and then add the dry lye, stirring, and add a little at a time while stirring. The chemical reaction between the lye and water generates a lot of heat.

Any chemists willing to give an experienced opinion?

....Just trying to keep everyone safe....

Hi Paul . You may be right about that . I haven't made any for a couple years now because I put what was left over back then into a small plastic bottle . I do remember now about how hot my container got though . I can't remember really what I did mix it up in , but I suggested a plastic bottle because it doesn't seem to effect the plastic . But I do know that it works great for stripping paint . Due to getting older & haven been taking so much meds for my health problems , I think it's effecting my memory plus another area . I seem to forget alot lately . I just wanted to try & help .Just be careful with how ever you mix it , is my concern . God bless , Ken

I had to give up on oven cleaner - wasn't strong or fast enough in my case (three or four layers of really stubborn paint).

I ended up using aircraft stripper on the cast iron, and electrolysis for the sheet metal.

I was mak'N a 3 lb. choice roast of beef fer a old "brother" last Sunday. After HE complained about my cook'N, I forgot to take the beef outta the cookstove. Well, now I MUST TRY SOMETH"N before the inspector arrives. 6 days of beef roasted. GRIND UP (shred) make meat loaf for brother next time. Same piece of BEEF.

Prime "aged" beef on board NAVY ships for the "officer's mess". Lebanon balonie for the simple B-17 flight engineer.

What brand cleaner?????cheap. John,PA
