I cannot recall who posted a while back about having trouble with people trespassing in a creek, but I just got another round, and it wasn't pretty. I have had several problems with someone who did not like the fact I had blocked access to a creek, and thought they would get a little revenge, and pull the large log across my gate. Last time it was the same one I used to block their access to the stream. Tonight I heard a lot of noise down that way, so I jumped in the truck and ran head on into a 4x4 pickup pulling a very large 20 foot log headed for my gate. This created a problem for them and it appeared they did not want a confrontation so they continued up the road with me following close behind. Hard to run very fast for long with something that in tow in low lock. Amazing how quickly someone can stop, drop a log chain off the bumper, get back in the truck and take off. I gave a little chase for a while, then decided I would take possession of the chain left lying in the road. Except by the time I got to it the look outs in another vehicle had already grabbed the chain. That was not a pretty sight, and I probably said some things and made some threats I shouldn't have as I sent a message to the driver of the truck. I may as well head out to get a new mailbox as I figure it will not last long. Maybe it is not all off topic, as I drug the log back out of the road with my tractor, but unfortunately I doubt the N would have done it as my 5000 diesel barely pulled it with the traction lock on, and you should see the road (N will get the job on that). Surprised they did it in broad daylight this time. Last time it was in the middle of the night. Now, opinions as to whether it is wise to confront these low lifes, or let them be would be welcome. It could obviously get pretty ugly, but it is not in my nature to stand by and watch them. Oh, and calling the local law is fruitless, BTDT.

Thank to all for some ideas. I think I have learned who is behind some of the damages I have been receiving, along with the log dragging into my drive. I had a guy come by yesterday, and we started talking and he said he found out who pulled the last log in my drive. Seems a neighbor hates that I got the place and blocked access to the creek, and posted it, and basically that I am around keeping him from having the run of things. I have not confirmed yet, but I believe the truck from Sat night is one that belongs to a guy that works for the guy up the road (concrete work). I'll have to wait till I see his truck sitting at his house. This all explains a lot. I always suspected him, but gave him the benefit of doubt, since the rest of the family are good people. Always a bad apple I guess. Now that I know who I am dealing with let the games begin. I know what vehicles to watch for now, and I can keep a closer eye out, and put the word out that I am making a project out of him. Should have known, mom used to tell me (parents owned the land before me) that he rode his atv up and down the road setting fires just so he could come later and put them out. He was on the so called vol fire dept, and his brother is the chief. Although I believe the rest of the family are good honest people, and I have never seen or heard anything bad out of the rest. Cannot say that about this one. He has also been fined several times for taking wildlife out of season, etc. You know the type..... drives a white F250 with huge camo fender flares (yes white with camo), and deer hunter bumper stickers all over the back glass and hunting license plate frames. Usually has his company name on the sides of his truck till around hunting season then removes them. Might be time to bait him up and get him on camera.

Ron, I talked to a local land owner here who has about your same problem. He used to hang the regular ole No Tresspasing signs. He does shoot skeet at his place on weekends. So this is what he did. He got some signs that say "Keep Out, Firearms Shooting Range". And also posted it with No Tresspasing signs. Now folks kinda take him a bit more serious he thinks. Not to say he would ever shoot anyone. The Firearms shooting range signs seem to be working for now.

The best way to get them is through the conservation laws. The conservation officers if they amount to a d*mn will kick 8ss and take names, and pickups and off road vehicles

That was me who posted about the tresspassers last month. Believe me - I feel your pain. Put up with it all last summer and already got a taste of whats to come this summer. Right now the creeks too high for them to get down there. When it dries up in the summer they"ll be back. I wish there was something I could do but I"ve about given up. Any action on my part will no doubt (as your adventure proves) lead to revenge on their part. I call the cops, my mailbox disappears. I call again, who knows buckshot at the house maybe. I go down and confront them, I may not come back. They have the upper hand not the landowner.

Don't give in Pete. I have made a lot of headway in 5 years. Yes you will get some resistence. Fence it tight and post it, block all entrances, be very visible, and some will disagree, but it is your property, and you have a right to confront trespassers, and ask them to leave, and do not come back. Initially I started calling the law when a party got going. The law did nothing, other than run them off, but at least I did not have to, and they did not like the attention at all, and will soon find another spot. I just got word by accident who is likely behind part of my problems. Seems one of the neighbors boys liked to use the stream, to hunt, party, atv, road hunt, etc. and is not happy I blocked it off and posted everything as well as moving in here. The place had been vacant for over 30 years. Seems he has been doing a little bragging about some of what he has done. I will check tomorrow, but I am 90% sure the truck from last night belongs to a guy who works for the neighbors son. I suspected the neighbor, but guess I gave him the benefit of the doubt since the rest of the family are good people. Last year he brought his little boy down to the stream. I let it slide because of the little boy as I hate running off an adult with a little one present. He is finished now regardless as he is not going to block my drive, cut my fences, etc and then enter my property. It is really a shame that no one can enjoy a lot of streams because of a few, but as I just found out you do not know the good guys from the bad guys.

These losers have nothing better to do than trespass on your property & play "get even"; the last thing I would do is try a physical confrontation w/ these morons. Given my nature to never take a knife to a gun fight, it could get ugly & it isn't worth it. You are smarter than these drunks, so make the law work for you. This was my suggestion to you last month & it hasn't changed:

Check the "Posted" laws in your state. They all vary. In VA, the sign has to be specific & actually 'posted' ever so many feet. Then, when they show up again, call the Sheriff. In VA, it's a felony. If the Sheriff refuses to do his job (it would not be the first time; ours will not enforce the noise ordinance) then go to the magistrate & swear out your own warrant & have it served. Chances are, the cretins will not show up in court. If they don't, then it becomes the court's problem. "Failure to Appear". The Sheriff will enforce that.

Got any DNR offices nearby? Riding in the creek is probably a violation of the Clean Water Act. Regardless, sic the DNR weenies on them. Nothing like a bureaucrat w/ a mission.

I remember this story IIRC it happened in Calif.

A gang type person was painting his calling card onto a public structure. Concerned Citizen approached and pencil and paper in hand proceeded to take down the license number of the car of the Gangster.

Gangster demands to know what CC is doing. CC says, "I'm taking down your license plate number" Gangster takes out a screwdriver and comes after CC. CC pulls out a gun and shoots gangster dead.

Its camera time. Take pictures of any and all car/truck that are trespassing and then give them to the local cop shop and press charges. BTDT on my place here at the lake. With pictures the cops can do things with out they can't because they can not watch you creek crossing 24/7

Just happen to notice this thread, don't mind me, but have had similar but not nearly as extreme confrontations with people tresspassing here. You should outsmart these idiots, positively ID them, seems like you could do that easily and let the law handle it once you have good information, license plate #s, descriptions, photos, hidden camera etc., you do realize the potential for being outnumbered if it ever gets out of hand, you could be in a bad situation quickly, best thing is to not be there even if armed, these kind of people are such a pain to deal with.

When I was a kid, I witnessed a bunch of teenager kids giving a teacher a beatdown in a parking lot across the road from our old ford tractor dealership by the local high school, luckily although the teacher was beat up, they caught the kids, he got outnumbered, looked like they were fooling around at first was an early evening on a saturday, that was not the case, made the call, I also saw what the state police did to the perpetrators, through the windows of the barracks before they were arraigned, right after the teacher was interviewed for the police report I lived right next door to the place, they got some similar treatment, well deserved too, shame they can't do that to people anymore.

Ron, Were these grown ups or kids? I find it hard to think that a grown man would do this but some folk just never grow up. When the law doesn't chose to come out and do their job you can file a malfesaunce in office charge on the weak chicken for dirlect of duty. Let them know your duccumenting and have a running list of every time you call and nothing is done or the problem isn't solved. All the good guys with the nutz are in Iraq right now and we are left with the bottom feeders to protect us honest folk. It's good to have a nice .45 on your hip but remember it's not the old West we once knew. Be carefull with these idiots!

Mark.

Hi Mark. Should have mentioned these were 'kids'. Around 18 to 20 and drinking. Common denominator on the ones I have the most problems are 1.age 2.drinking 3.numbers (usually a group of them). Then there are the grownups who road hunt in broad daylight. Common denominators there are 1.older around 30 to 50 2. usually do not work 3. can hunt legally, but too lazy to do it legally, and 4.do not own any land of their own. In the last couple of months I have caught a group of kids spotlighting deer (took a plate and turned over to conservation agent), bashing my mailbox (never saw them, but heard them), and now this episode I beleive to be connected. This is a small community, and I know what the truck looks like, and it is not very common. Looks to be daddy's truck as not many that age can afford a nearly new heavy duty 4x4 pickup. If I can find out who the truck belongs to I will inform dad how his truck is being used on weekends. Their odds are not in their favor, as I usually catch them two times out of three. By the way, this time I never got a plate number. Pickup had no rear plate, and I was too involved in letting the other vehicle driver know what I thought to think straight. I never carry a gun to avoid doing something I might regret. Usually when I have confronted them face to face I never see them again. They tried to take great this time to avoid getting caught, but it is hard to miss the sound of a 4x4 truck dragging a huge log up a gravel road.

Hey Ron -

I don't know the cost, a "spike strip" that law enforcement uses might work. Daddy might not appreciate junior bringing home 4 flat tires. Something else one can use is a wildlife camera to catch all the action without actually being there.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the knuckleheads your dealing with would be very vendictive.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ
