Electrical Problem

Went out to barn Saturday to get lawn tractor going and though I should also start up the 1953 NAA. She started fine, but when I turned on the lights, the engine cut right off. Now will not start at all. Engine turns over, but will not catch. Advice on what to check, please.

Thanks in advance.

Check the battery cable connections, My tractor quit like that yesterday. After checking this and that I found one of the cables was corroded. Cleaned it up and it fired right back up!

Thanks guys, I'll check it out this week and get back to you with results. Gotta get the Craftsman mower up and running first, the grass will need cutting pretty darn quick. I appreciate the time and advice from you all.

Randy..... ..since headlites were dealer installed, sometimes they were "incorrectly" wired THRU the weaksister ignition switch. ...ie... lites on only when engine runs. Why, 'cuz it was more convenient for the installer to hook-up the lite-wire.

The weaksister ignition switch internal contacts gitt gunked up over time and when you turned yer headlites on this time you OVERLOADED yer ignition switch and lost yer sparkies.

Now you have 2-problems, NO sparkies (bad switch, $15, cheap) and FLOODED sparkies from crankin'. Do I haffta tell you to replace yer BAD weaksister ignition switch???

REPLACE yer FLOODED sparkies with new DRY clean AutoLite 437's gapp = 0.025". Don't throw yer flooded sparkies away, dry them one-atta-time in HOT running engine and sav'em for the NEXT time you have starting problems..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

As Sound says and or maybe a wire that was weak or mouse ate burned in two. First thing I would do is check for spark and if you have none try a hot wire from the battery to the coil. If it starts hot wired then you know the problem is from the coil back to the switch/battery. If it doesn't start when hot wired then its from the coil forward

Hate those kinds of problems where there seems to be no connection between what you did and what happens..... think I would first be sure there was fresh gas in the tank and I had the gas turned on. Then I would check the points and clean or replace..... .... gap to 0.025". Then I would pull the plugs and either clean or replace with a gap of 0.025"..... ... and if that didn't get her to start, I'd check all electrical connections from the battery to the key switch to the coil to the distributor and ground to be sure they were clean and tight. The points seem to be the #1 problem in starting with my Jubilee.... may be yours as well.

My -guess- is that the lights on that tractor are run thru the ignition switch, and you either burned up the ignition switch, or the small wire feeding the ignition switch.

Those ignition switches were made for the 3-4 amps of current to power the primary sid eof the ignition coil.. not the 6a per lamp plus the ignition ( 15-16a ).

I like to power my lamps from the same post that feeds power tot he ignition switch ( this is the charge/load side of the ammeter basically )

start there.. use a vom or a test lamp and chase the votls.. see where you have them.. and where you loose them.

as a test.. jumper from battery hot to input/primary side of ignition coil and try to start her.. if she starts.. you know the problem is in the primary circuit between the battery and the coil.
