I have a 48 8N. Front dist,12Volt, new intake-exhaust gasket, rebuilt carb. Starts fine with aid of choke. Can't get it to run smooth without choke partly out. After working , must use more and more choke. Adjusted both screws on carb, still no help. Any ideas? Could it be a timing issue? Need some help. Thanks

I agree with the others.. sounds like a vacume leak.. leaks will lean your mix out.. pulling the choke enriches the mix...to make up for the lean mix from the leak.

Pyppyboy..... .since you claim it starts fine, it aint'chur timing.

Check yer sparkies firing order, 1,2,4,3 CCW. These N-Engines are so good that they will start and run on just 2-cylinders, especially iff'n you enrich yer mixture with a 1/2-carb pull. Usually its sparkies 3 & 4 that gitt swapped.

Needing a pull of the choke to start is NORMAL.

Requiring a continuous pull of part choke is usually a sign of leaky carb gaskets somewhere; 'specially since you replaced yer intake gaskets.

Heres what I do; I'd spray WD-40 with that cute itty-bitty straw around all the intake gaskets. Why? 'cuz the oil in WD-40 will seal the leak and won't hurt nuttin as it gitts sucked in. And it won't catch fire neither. Be selective with yer spray so you really identify where the leak is.

Remember, the intake/exhaust manifold BRASSNUTS are torqued to only 27ft/lbs. NO SEALING PUCKEY on intake gaskets 'cuz the HOT EXAUST will BURN the puckey and you won't beable to remove the gaskets later.

The Marvel/Schebler carb is somewhat different to clean and adjust. Remember, carb drawings LIE. While both Ford and M/S say to adjust BOTH the side-pointing idlemix and the down-pointing mainjet to 1-turn. That is just a starting point. Each carb must be individually adjusted to its engine, much to the dismay of environmental bureaucrats.

I set the down-pointing mainjet to 2-turns and LEAVITT!!! I adjust the side-pointing idlemix for maximum idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, MAX idle. I then adjust the behind the carb idlespeed for an incredibly SLOOooow 400rpms. (ennythang under 500rpms is good) I do the idlemix-idlespeed adjust at least 3-times, always adjust for maximum idle rpms. Understand?

Remember yer side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS, out for lean, IN for ENRICH. The last time I adjusted my eazy starting 6-volt '52-8N, my sidepointing idlemix was 1/4-turn, and 410rpms. Yours will be different, but close..... ..HTH, Dell

first thing i would do, would be to check for vacum leak. that is why u have to choke it to cut off air so it will run.

Gas tank vent clogged and or you missed something when you rebuilt the carb which is very easy to do

My tractor would run only with the choke part way out,the problem was trash in the main jet circuit. I removed the small brass plug from bottom of carb.and blew it out and solved the problem.
