freind took tractor apart to paint and did not mark wires to put them back they tried to start but no luck genny got warm and drained the battery down so need to check wireing

Sounds like they reversed the battery and armature wires at the regulator. Not real friendly to the genny letting the battery discharge thru it..

Check your service manual for a point to point wire diagram... it's pretty simple... genny arm to regulator arm/gen tab.. fld on genny to fld on reg.. ground on genny ( if available ) to ground on vreg.. or wire under base of reg.

From there. it depends on if you have a 2-post ammeter or the loop.

Wire all loads.. lamps and key ignition on one sid eo fthe ammeter, including the charge line from the vreg.. the other side of the ammeter gets wired to the battery.. or the hot side of the solenoid.

all there is to it. if ammeter reads backwards.. swap wires side to side.. or if loop style.. run wire back thru opther direction..
