Bruce;

Did you ever get your Troy Built tiller prob. solved, and if ya did....what solved it????

I think you jinxed mine. Troy built Horse...10 horse engine. First liar ain't got a chance...but, now mine won't do anything but backfire about every third pull.
Just thought I'd ask you what the prob. was with your's, maybe I can find my prob. I've had this thing tore apart four times now, and am about to the end of the pull rope!!!! :shock:
TIA

Gary :)

Gary:

On many of the small engines I have done in the past, they have the magneto built into the flywheel. The magnets get a little rust on them & fail to deliver adequate spark. I just rub some fine sandpaper on both surfaces & that solves the problem..... Just another guess.

I'm with Lee on the keyway. Don't take much to get them outta time.

I know it's too obvious but a bad plug can act the same way.

If it is indeed backfiring then more than likely the flywheel key is partially sheared. Pull the flywheel and look at the key closely. If it even has an indent in it lenghtwise replace it. -Lee '51N

I've got the smaller version, a Pony or something; I figure 5 - 7hp. It must have been dirt/varnish in the carb. I pulled it down & sprayed it out w/ carb cleaner & compressed air. I was afraid to use the real soaking type carb cleaner on it because of all the plastic & aluminum parts. Put it back together & it runs fine now. I also cleaned the gas tank & fuel line just in case. I'm glad it wasn't electrical; if so, I would have been back here w/ an OT request for help!

Bruce;

Thanks for the reply. So, I guess I'll go back and tear into the carb. again!! I've already cleaned the mag. and wires, thinking it was the usual prob., without any luck, and thought I cleaned the carb. out!!!??? LOL

BUT.... I tend to believe it is carb. related, due to the backfiring, but not running.
Thank's, I'll try the carb. again!!!!!
Like chasin' kids around!!
:lol:
Gary :shock: :?

What engine do you have on yours?? I pulled the wash tub off my troy bilt in march, drained the carb and cleaned it some and primed the carb and it fired right up. Koler engine 7HP on the one I have. My dad got it new in 1972 and its on its 3rd tranny and 2nd engine but it tills the garden every year and hasn't had a tune up in who knows how long. Shoot I just used it 3 days ago and worked with out missing a beat.

I really hate these little engines. It's not only the technology that challenges my 1949 vintage mind, but the fact that even the screws require special tools.

:lol: I can tell you would JUST love to work on snowmobile engines!!!!!NOT!!!!!

Just to get the stator off of my 700CC, takes two dif. size allen wrenches and two dif.angle phillips screw drivers. And all those screws are factory sealed with some kind of epoxie gunk!!!!

Now that's what I call FUN.!!!! NOT EVEN!!!! :lol:
Have a great day Bruce

Gary :)
