Loose cylinder sleeve. Any fix?

While tearing down the 2N to repair what I thought was a rod knock, I discovered that the crank and rods are fine, but the #4 sleeve is loose enough to move up and down in the bore. I was able to pull it out by hand. It is a thin wall sleeve and it it has a very tight slip fit in the bore. Will some sleeve retainer compound or (gasp!) JB weld fix me right up, or do I need to bite the bullet and bore the block for thick sleeves? Can the cylinder wall be knurled or sandblasted to raise the surface, then honed enough to press the sleeve in? I need to fix this fast- the grass is getting tall!

Thanks!

Do all N series Tractors have sleeves in the Cylinder bores in reply to tesmith66, 04-25-2008 04:21:24
Do all of the N series tractors have sleeves or only once the blocks are warn out?

I'm guessing they are dry and not wet sleeves ?

All N series engines have sleeves (dry).

There is a reason, or reasons that the sleeve is loose. What are the odds that it is the only one of the four that is going to come loose? Speaking from personal experience, my new-to-me 1950 frontmount dropped a sleeve the second year I owned it. Working full time & only having one tractor (as well as no experience inside of an engine since 1976 or so) it went to the shop. The guy there said I could take a chance & replace one sleeve, or do it right & replace them all. I said do one; I need the tractor back quickly.

The next year, it dropped a second sleeve.

I learned my lesson. Cost of tuition? about $400 as I recall!

you can try to replace that sleeve with a new one. Sometimes they just don't fit well after years of hot/cold cycles. My 8N was like that. If a new standard sleeve won't fit, try a .005 oversize sleeve. They are made for both the .040 and .090 sleeved engines. A new sleeve is better than sleeve compound any day of the week...and fairly cheap too..less than 30 bucks for a sleeve I would bet.

Is that .005 over or .0005 over? If it"s just a tad loose and has not worn the block out badly I can"t imagine getting a .005 oversize sleeve in that hole without boring/honing a fair amount of material out first.

No JB! Use an anerobic sleeve retainer - cheap and effective. Loctite/Permatex makes several different formulations. Do not dawdle when installing the sleeve with the the retaining compound. It cures quickly and if you stop in the middle it will lock your sleeve in place partially installed.
