Rebuilding front end question

Hi guys---tonite I took off the left front wheel and replaced both the inner and outer cones and bearings. Put a new dust seal on and tightened everything up tight and then backed off the nut about an 1/8th of an inch.

The wheel turns freely, but not easily. I can turn the wheel with one finger on the hub but cannot just "spin" the wheel.

Is this "tightness" normal because everything is new or should I recheck my work.

All the races went in to the stop "ledge" inside the hub and I filled the inside cavity with axle grease.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Tim

That's a lot of wasted grease. I remember doing that once & thought my father was going to have a heart attack.

That's a lot of wasted grease. I remember doing that once & thought my father was going to have a heart attack. Just pack the bearing w/ a $3 bearing packer, or in the palm of your hand (like I was taught to do) butter up the races & put it back together. Like Dunk sez, just back off the nut a bit & reset the cotter key.

That's a lot of wasted grease.

Actually, even to pack tapered rollers full it too much, in most circumstances. When bearings are packed 100% full of grease, the grease is forced to constantly circulate. (Not even talking here about the inner cavity between.)

Tapered bearings should be packed approximately 60% leaving adequate head space. The film between the race and roller will not go dry.

Bearings that are fully packed will have much higher resistance at high speed. Heat is the result.

We are not going to run these bearings at 65 or 80 MPH.

It ain't that critical.

If you would like for it to turn eaiser, back it off another 1/8" and see if you are happy.

I just feel mine anyway...

Even the 4x4 fronts, that I do run 75, 80 MPH.

You don't want slop, and for sure you don't want friction and heat from being too tight.
