Royce..... .congratulations, you have discovered the Dealer Installed "Sherman" aux tranny. While they came as OverDrive, UnderDrive, or yours is most likely the more desireable 3-speed combo. The 3-speed combo has a crooked "S" dogleg shifter lever while the OD & UD have a simple "L" shifter lever.

Is this a "rare breed", not really; highly desirable, yes indeed. Records are UN-clear but it has been estimated about 50% of all 8N's have them.

Yep, sumptin' came disconnected inside yer tractor tranny housing and the ONLY way to find out is doing the dreaded tractor split. Surprizingly enuff, the Sherman is relatively bullet proof. NEVER shift on the fly, shift while standing still. (its a tranny design thing)

It is alway good to replace yer NEW-to-you tractor fluids. Interestingly, there is NO fill'em-up fer the Sherman tranny. It gitts auto-filled by the main tranny front gear oil-slinger thru the spaces of the bearing cage. Then when you turn tractor off, the overfill leaks back into the main tranny and gitts recirculated. Sooo NO reason or need to fill and drain the Sherman. Isn't that clever???

As I said, Shermans are relative bullet-proof but repair kits are available.

Check out the link to John Smiths excellent Sherman tranny page..... ...Dell
