Below is how I do it on my NAA, I believe it would be the same on a side mount 8N. The only difference being that on a NAA it would be counter clockwise rather than clockwise on an 8N.

Bring #1 Cylinder to Top Dead Center - TDC, (piston at top), flywheel will be at 0 degrees in site window on bell housing. Point rotor to #1 spot and install distributor, ensuring the oil pump gear is lined up in bottom. Turn distributor clockwise until points are just beginning to break. Ensure that rotor is still pointing to where #1 wire will plug into distributor. If not, it may be off a tooth on the gear. If so pull out turn and reinstall. If it doesn’t crank, while distributor is in, move #1 to TDC, check flywheel to make sure on 0 then take off the cap and see if the rotor is pointing at #1. If not, you may need to pull out and move a tooth and reinstall. Once it cranks, adjust timing, most likely will need to advance since you are starting at 0.

Burruel..... ..to static time the 5-nipple sidemount 8N distributor, you haffta find the timing marks under the teardrop coverplate. There are 2-sets of timing marks 180-deg apart so it really don't matter which on you use. Timing is 0-deg static, 4BTDC idle 400rpms and max 18deg at 2200rpms.

Generally, when 5-nipple distributor body is installed correctly with insulated feed thru at about 8-o'clock, the #1 nipple will be about 10-o'clock. Firing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW.

I use a "test-lite" to static time, remember lite-on when points OPEN. (points gap = 0.025") When flywheel timing mark is 0-deg, turn distributor body CW to open the points. LITE-ON and yer static timed. Simple, eh?

After you gitt'chur engine runnin', you can use yer timing lite for 4-BTDC at 400rpms. ..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Go here & look under Electrical.
When you do a copy/paste, you must remove all the underscores.
