I would appreciate any suggestions and expertise. It is a "old gray dog', Sears model 917.255692, with a Kohler Engine model CV14S, type # 1445. 14.0 HP OHV, electric Start, 42" deck. It died while running 10 days ago. The starter works, the motor/shaft turns, but no ignition. Sticking a wooden handle screwdriver into the sparkplug boot, resulted in NO spark while cranking. Plenty of fuel, new battery. The sparkplug is about 2 months old. From the LAWN TRACTOR FORUM, I have received the advice to insure clutch safety is off, and also check the grounding wire from the coil. As it is so far away I would like to know if there are other areas I should be prepared to check?

Good ole Kohler and Craftsman.....what a combination. If its not the fuel shutoff solenoid below the carb bowl....or a grounded "kill" lead on the ignition coil...it could be one or both of two "operator presence" relays which are supposed to insure that you can neither crank or start the engine without an operator being present in the seat. One is hooked up to a contact on the clutch/brake pedal and the other is controlled by a switch on the mower attachment clutch and both are master operated by the seat switch located under the seat. What they are trying to do is make sure the tractor is not started without a person in the seat with the clutch depressed and the mower deck de-activated....which is all fine and good but which leads itself to a plethera of wiring and no-start issues once the machine gets a few hours on it. You can get a real basic wiring diagram from www.craftsman.com.....and a good service manual for the engine from www.kohlerengines.com.....but be prepared with a good volt/ohm meter to take some voltage and continuity readings once you get back to the tractor. Lastly....some of these mowers had a stator brake on them and a spark advance module so be prepared to pull the flywheel as well. Good luck!!!

Go to www.sears.com and click on parts (upper right). Put the model number you list in the search block (you may have to register but it's free) and you will get all the manuals for the mower including electrical. This machine has Clutch, Trans Neutral, Seat and blades engaged safety switches on it. Any of these will ground out the ignition. It also has a fuse but that may be for batery charge only.

Probably one of those saftey switches under the seat, and if you are not sitting on it, you won't any spark.

Someone had a similar problem a while back & I suggested the "voltpack" box possibly went bad. That could be your problem too but I had forgot about the safety switches on these things. Might not hurt to staightwire them (temporarily of course) to see if ones bad.

You must be prepared to remove the sheet metal around the engine. Then the "flywheel" to get to the ignition parts. Probably even a set of points and condenser.

Without someone showing you how to do the above, could be hazardous to your HANDS as well as the ENGINE, too.

You can view or download for FREE the service manual at kohlerengines.com.

If it doesn't have spark with the "kill" wire to the engine disconnected (CAREFUL, shold it start unexpectedly), the problem MUST lie within the enine unit itself, and the troubleshooting tips at the Kohler site should walk you through that.
