I am trying to help out the neighbor in getting a 1987 BMW 325 running. It has been sitting for 2 years & the last time it ran he couldn’t re-start, so he parked it. There is no spark to the plugs. I have replaced the rotor & cap but still no spark at the plugs. I have tested one of the plug wires for continuity & get none. Is it possible that all of the plug wires have deteriorated to the point that they show no continuity? Is there something else I should be looking for? I have 12V at the coil with the ignition on, but no current gets to the plugs. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Like others have said it sounds like the pickup assembly inside the distributer is bad. Not sure how that little beast is setup but I imagine it has some sorta trigger system or something like that that fires off the coil into the rotor which goes out your distro cap.

Did you check the coil to distributor wire?

Colin

I didn't see a "pickup coil" inside the distributor. The condenser seemed to be built into the rotor. Did I miss it?

Dan,I would check the little pickup coil inside the distributor. You can check it with a ohm meter,or pull it out and take it to auto parts store for a free check.Remember the plug wires are resistor wires.
