i adjusted the left steering sector and took all the slack out of the gears, but when i went to do the right side, there was no adjustment there. so i pulled the right hand stearing gear out and it appears to be ok. is there anything else i should look at that may be causing the slop only on the right side of my steering?

Is this an old style box on an 8n? ( you don't give very many details.. we don't charge by the word here.. the more info you give us, the better answers you get. ).

If it is as I guessed, it could be the bushings are too worn to get any adjustment out of rotating the side cover..

it is the old style, it has four bolts that you remove and you turn the pitman arm retainer clockwise. so if the bushing is to worn to get any more adjustment out of, what is the procedure for replacing the bushing? do i have to remove the steering gear box from the tractor or can i just pull out the gearshaft that the right hand pitman arm is attached to and access it there.

You can do much of the R&R on the tractor.. however if you have to service the lower bearing race.. the box needs to be pulled. Get a copy of the I&T fo-4 manual.. there is a great step by step recipe for R&R of the 2 gearbox types on the 8n.. helps you get it all buttoned back up and timed right. ( the steering box is not a hard job.. many of us here have rebuilt ours.. )
