OT. Hi guys. Just wanted to share some pics of my truck. I made this hitch coupler up just to be different! And yes they are real K5LA horns on top! This is the truck I use to pull my 2N with, and to haul firewood in the bed while pulling a loaded trailer. I like to use it, not drive it around like a car. Hope the pics made someone smile.

I will have to assume that you don't read, you just think you know it all...

Here is one of my prievous posts.

Durant's Iron Horse, the Samson Model D, used the 26hp, 171-cu.in., four-cylinder gasoline engine from the Chevrolet 490, a transmission belt drive, independent controls for each side of the tractor and chain-and-sprocket drive to all four wheels. It weighed in at 1,900 pounds. Initial advertisements priced it at $630, but when it went on sale in 1919, it carried a $450 price tag. A photo in Gustin's book shows Durant personally demonstrating the Model D at the 1919 New Jersey state fair in Trenton.

I could not agree with you more!!! That coupler came from Strausburg RR in PA where they only run steam! The guys ( jim and kelly) up there gave it to me to cut down to make a hitch out of they thought it would be great.

As a railrod enthusiast, I love it. Was it std gauge or a narrow gauge coupler?

$33,000,000.00 was lost on the Samson venture and the plug was pulled on the whole operation in 1923 and the Janesville assembly plant was turned over to Chevrolet where full size Chevrolet and GMC SUV’s are still built today.

Not the best ever photograph of this rare tractor but the best I got from the show...

Text from the Pioneer Acres website (about the above tractor):

RARE GMC TRACTOR

July 5, 1999

Pioneer Acres will be showing off its 1918 Samson Sieve-Grip tractor in the vintage machinery section of the 1999 Calgary Exhibition and Stampede (July 9 - 18). It will then be moved to the Museum for permanent display and demonstration.

This unusual three-wheeled tractor is one of only 7 or 8 remaining in North America. It was manufactured by the Samson Tractor Company of Stockton, California. When Ford went into the tractor business GMC felt the need to make tractors of their own to remain competitive. Rather then start from scratch in the tractor business, GMC bought out Samson. This resulted in the manufacture of only about 140 model 30 X GMC Samson Sieve Grips.

The name Sieve-Grip comes from the tractor's huge steel wheels which utilize metal cleats for traction. When cultivating, the open construction of these wheels help to break up the ground instead of packing it. It was intentionally built low to go under fruit trees in orchards. A seated driver cannot see the front wheel over the long hood. A large arrow is attached to the steering mechanism to indicate the direction of the front wheel.

The 5,800-pound beast is powered by a gargantuan 425-cubic-inch inline four cylinder gasoline engine equipped with a unique Remy electric governor (early form of cruise control). Also out of the ordinary is a water-filled air cleaner descriptively labelled Nodust Moisto Rizer. Top speed is 3.5 miles per hour and the braking system is rudimentary metal-to-metal. The clutch is virtually identical to steam-driven tractors of the era.

This rare tractor has been restored during the past winter and spring. It was purchased in the 1960's by a Pioneer Acres member who spent the rest of his life collecting parts for it. Unfortunately, by the time he had everything he needed he was ill with cancer and passed away in the fall of 1998. The project was completed in his memory by a long-time friend who is also a member of the Club. Some parts had to be hand-fabricated.

Many Samson/GMC Sieve-Grips were used in Western Canada as well as in the U.S.

If your close to Janesville Wi. I can give you the phone number to set up a plant tour. On the tour there is a restored Samson sitting in the lobby. I could try to get a photo of it but cameras are forbidden in the plant and it"s close to the guards station.

LOL!! Me to!! We have 4 Fords. The 9N and 2N will out live the car and truck!! LOL

I think that I proved that GMC, even using Chevy engines, did make tractors, at the plant that still makes GMC/Chevy trucks/SUVs

My '88 Blazer that I bought new has around 500,000 miles.

I just saw your post a fell out of my chair at lunch time. I'm at work in the original Samson Tractor factory. Still building trucks for GM. We have a restored Samson Tractor sitting in the lobby up front. I'm at The Janesville Wi, GM truck plant and we don't see many references to anything Samson on the net. Too bad I missed the Ebay auction.
Thanks for the flashback though!

There are 40 inch grover horns underneath too. I put the train horns on top because I am into steam whistles and some horns. The horns take way less air than steam whistles do. I have 30 gallons of air. It is plenty to blow for a minuate or more.

You may want to take the liquid out of the 2N tires, maybe drain the radiator and oil sump to reduce weight and drag.
