Tried posting twice today, also no-go. Sent email to Administration. Hope 3rd time works. I followed all suggestions I could. Removed all, Re-cleaned all terminals and contact places, re-checked points, tried coil on w/o gskt., replaced old condenser, pulled pigtail a bit more--N was starting & working OK right up till put in our garage 4/24. Continues to show 0 amps w/key off and -10 w/key on, meaning non-specific short? Will get test equipment mentioned and get neighbor to show me how to use; I'm electrically challenged! P.S. Bruce(VA): I'm 84; can do heavy work, but holding tiny washers, etc., and peering into front of the N is getting tough. This is a puzzlement as have done it before so much. Anyway will get it right. Thanks again. Will post back. Angelo

Remove the wire from the top of the coil and then turn on the ignition. There should be no drop in Amps. If there is a drop in Amps then you have a short somewhere before the distributor. If there is no drop in Amps then re attach the wire to the coil and put the tractor in highest gear and rock it back and forth with the rear wheel or if you have a hand crank turn the engine with that or sometimes you can turn the engine with the fan if the belt is tight enough. If the Amps remain the same as the engine is turned then you have a short circuit in the distributor.

Remove the two bolts holding the distributor to the front of the engine and remove the distributor. Don't attempt to fix the points with it on the tractor. Too much of a circus act for us old folks.

Well, you do have me beat age-wise, but even at 59, I'm looking at stuff (like the points) on my work bench w/ a magnifying glass!

What does the ammeter on the tractor do when you crank the engine w/ the key on? Does it dip? All a discharge on the ammeter means w/ the key on is that the points are closed. Turn the key on. crank the engine, & tell us what the ammeter does.

You do remove the distributor from the tractor to work on it, right?

I'm sorry you are so far away, or I would come by and help you.

We can still walk one step at a time over the internet, but it will be slow.

Start with flipping the bale off the coil and positioning it where the contacts (all 3) are touching nothing. Now, when key is on, did the -10Amp drain disappear?
