Baler for 8n...

I am considering purchasing a baler that would be used with my Ford 8n... I am looking at a New Holland 273 small square baler, but am unsure whether my 8n will be able to bale with it. I found some individuals that said that the 273 would work with a 25hp tractor (most likely baling slow with small windrows) and others that were recommending a 35hp. What would your recommendations be? Would I be under powered with the 273 and my 8n, if so what baler would be better suited to this size of tractor? Thank you for your time.

I bale alfalfa with a tired 8N and a New Holland Hayliner 68. My ground is mostly flat, and I pull a small hayrack behind the baler (100 bales max).

The only time I have to do the "8N Two-step" is if I hit a really thick windrow. I've learned to adjust my windrows (cut with a 7' sickle bar, rake two rows into one windrow), and bale in 1st, or 2nd if the windrow is really light (to keep the bale chamber packed).

If I had a really thick stand of hay, or was on hilly ground, I probably would not use the 8N, but in my situation, it works just fine. Pulling a two-bottom plow through sod works the tractor harder than baling does...

I've read more than a few posts over the years from guys that were using 8N's to bale with a NH 273, 67 or MF 3. You just have to be prepared to pop the tranny out of gear to let the baler catch-up before stalling the engine. But, I have also read posts that baling with a N is hard on the N. A weak, poor running N won't stand a chance. And stay on flat ground. Is it ideal, no, will it work, probably.
The Farmall H had 24 belt HP, and was a 2 bottom plow machine, the same as a N but with a lot more weight and bigger tires.

For the most part an 8N and a baler does not work. Yes it has been done and is being done but the 8N is way to light to pull one well plus doesn't really have the HP needed to do so. Now if you find a baler that has its own engine then yes it can be done but its still a case where the baler will be as heavy or heavier then the tractor is and if you have any hills that makes it unsafe. Also with it not having live PTO it is real hard to bale with one also

It seems to amaze me that very few ever consider loaded tires and rear weights on the "N" tractors. My 2N as equipped scales 3600# less operator and pulls much heavier loads around on these hills than a small NH 67/68 or MF #3 baler would weigh. One of these tractors well weighted is entirely more effecient than one with no ballast(2500#) Mr. Bob

Bob, also look at how effient or ineffient the brakes are on the N series machines. Yes folks have done it but we never said it was a good idea. The smallest machine that I would consider baling with is something in the size range of a Farmall H.

The Farmall H was a common baling tractor in the 50s.8Ns always used an engine powered baler.A baler is hard work for my 640.

Bob I understand ballast but still an 8N just isn't enough tractor to handle a baler well. Shoot I have an 8N that probably tips the scale at over 5000lbs if not a lot more but it also has a back hoe on it and thats sort of a joke. But it does ok for what I need to do on the farm
