JMOR, thanks for your (& others') patience and thorough guidance. Flat copper strap is OK; did notice carbon build up on steel rotor contact to ctr. of cap, but I cleaned off; other items look OK to me. Going to put assembled distributor on again as a unit so can see as well as possible that pigtail's in place in concave screw. Final question re lugs on distributor to slots on camshaft end: though did straight-edge test in Manual, lugs have changed as I kept checking points opening. I WON'T tighten distributor till fits flat all around against cylinder front cover, but what if lugs are now 180 degrees off from when I removed? Angelo

Been working on this for a few days, I think I got all my shorts cleaned up, but broke my resister in the process. connected the wires together bypassing the resister. With my test light I get voltage at the top post of the coil, but none at the curled wire, either with the coil on the distributor or not. Is it a bad coil?

Angelo,

The tang on the back of the distributor is not centered, but it is slightly offset. If you align it correctly so that the dist fits flush onto the front engine cover, then it will not be 180 off. Some people have not noticed this and get it 180 off and then try to pull the dist tight to the front cover with the 2 bolts. The result of this mistake is a broken dist casting with one or both of the bolt ears sheared off. Most of the dist housings are cast aluminum, and it is of sufficient strength if assembled correctly to the engine. If the dist housing fits tight to the engine, the alignment and timing is correct and can be easily bolted up with no risk of breakage.

Good Luck

The lugs/slot are off center & won't go back wrong...unless forced & then something will break. Use no force.....be sure flush mating surfaces before using wrench.
