FEL and brush hoging-is it wrong?

My 8N is currently dead although I plan to revive it when the time comes. I'm planning another tractor purchase but would really like to have a FEL this time around and A little more hp for hogging. I don't think I have ever seen a tractor with a FEL Hogging. Is it a stupid idea. Too much fuel consumption because of the weight or the two just don't mix well on the same tractor. Maybe steering is just to difficult or some other concern? Does anyone brushhog regularly with a hog and FEL attached? It just dosen't seem to go together?

I don't think it's a problem to hog with a loader. I've been doing it since I was about 13 or 14 years old, and always thought it was a blast! In our case, I agree with what one of the other guys said: the loader keeps the front end on the ground.

RF:

For nearly 15 years I bushogged with a 51 8N with FEL. It can be done but the tractor steers harder and is much less maneuverable because the FEL constantly gets in the way. I took the loader off 15 years ago when I rebuilt the engine and have never put it back on.

It's the only way I do it but it isn't with an N. The grounds guys at work run 1/2 a dozen loader tractors with reel and rotary units on the back. Other than limiting your manueverabilty a bit in tight quarters it's a non-issue. Again I'm not talking N's. I don't think N's are well suited to loaders in any form.

Years ago I did just that. Front loader can be handy with a hog on back. With a loader you can sort of feel your way through the thick stuff and keep from hitting things like stumps etc that you do not want to hit with the hog, or in some cases push the stump out before you hit it. I don't use that tractor for hogging any more because I have others that work as well and have live PTO where as the one with the loader does not have live PTO

Like "Old" said above, used it to feel my way through areas not cut before looking for stumps, rocks, and equipment. Also going up and down hill figured I had front end weight was perhaps a little safer going up hill.

Downsides - takes more effort to turn with the loader, more bouncing on your front end, and because of the loader in some corners you can not quite as close.

Just what I experience using my 8N.

That's the nice thing about a newer tractor... more HP... power steering.... live power... live, controllable hydraulics...and there is nothing ill-borne about bush hogging with a loader up front.

Go for it!! duey
