Put in 10 acres of alfalfa and oats today using a neighbor's M and my John Deere originally-drawn-by-a-horse grain drill. Took me a while to figure out all the settings on the drill (never used one before, and no manual). Had a real pleasant day out there!

All I can say is that the Lord provides! The green tractor belongs to our "next door" neighbor (a mile away), who stopped by to see if I could braze a broken fuel line for him, and in the course of conversation, offered the 730 to disc. The red tractor belongs to a "real farmer" who stores his big combine in my other machine shed, and he brought the M down yesterday after seeing me in the field pulling the drill with my pickup truck.

Folks around here have been mighty kind to this Southern City Boy. I tend to provide a lot of free entertainment to them in return... :P

Not sure why the pics do that. I'm posting them on my web site (www.peachtreeprairie.com), and doing standard image links when I post. Must be something with the hosting service...

Considering that the "M" is a contemporary to the "N," the N feels positively modern compared to the M, which has a certain slap-dash feel to control locations, etc.

Velly interesting! I have a SMTA and that exact same 'antique' double disc planter. Your disc harrow looks a little wider than my 14 ft IH model 36 though.

Be sure to tell your neighbor about the free IH gas cap program. It covers his M.

P.S. and to think, folks give us Texans a hard time about it being so flat here!

Hmmm. Mine have pins with cotter pins in 'em, not bolts. Left side came right out, minimal visible wear. I've heated, PB Blastered, pounded, and used strong language at the right side, plus even put it in my press, all to no avail (except for mushrooming the end of the pin).

Probably gonna have to drill it out. Ugh.

Here is a pic of what Gary is talking about. the bolts get worn unevenly creating a shoulder that catches when you are trying to remove it:

Gary,

Making steady progress on the N... All the big iron is back together, now just working on cleaning, painting and installing the small stuff. Bunches of parts ordered and waiting to be delivered, too (four new wheels came yesterday!).
Biggest challenge is that the front axle kingpin and right radius rod pin are both rust-welded in place. Once I get past those, things should move pretty quickly.
Hand is doing well, too - a bit stiff in the mornings, and probably only 90% strength and flexibility, but I'm thankful every morning I have a hand to work with!

ED;

OH yeh, the dreaded king pin and radius rod bolt.....Those can be a PITA!!

I didn't have too much trouble with the king pin. The rad. bolts were sompin' else though!!!

I found on the rad. bolts, if ya jack up the front with just enough pressure off the axle, then souse the nuts and bolts with PB Blaster, and smack them good with a BFH on both ends, that it will eventually break the rust and wear grooves loose then beat the nuts off the bolts. I ended up using a pipe wrench with a 5 ft. cheater bar on them. Once I got the rust broke loose and the nuts off, I used the blunt end of a punch to drive the bolts up and out. The bolts had wear shoulders on them, that ya can't see, so... you just have to keep messin' with the jack pressure to get them out.
GOOD luck, and HTH

Gary :)

Don't know if others on the modern view had problems with the pictures but all that showed up was two boxes with red X's in them. I right clicked on the X and left clicked on "Show picture". Great pictures. I saw a lot of dust today also bush hogging about two acres with my 8N. David.

I loved it!!! :) But those days are LOOnnnggg gone now!!! I think I was 12 or 13 when I started running one of those!!! :D
How ya doing on your "N" project???

Hope the hand is healing nicely.
