Thought it was 6 but it's actually 12v

Took the genny to the auto-electric shop and got a surprise - The genny is a 12v automotive - which also explains why the VR is "oblong" instead of square.
The expert says that I have a 12v regulator too(good thing). He said if I keep this genny - I should swap out the 6v battery I have for a 12v and run it negative ground.
This complicates things a bit - It guess I need to put that resistor back on the coil circuit - any other things I need to be concerned with? He said he could order some parts and make the genny into a 6v but it's cheaper/easier to rebuild it as a 12v. I told him to keep it at 12v....I hope I'm on the right track, I like the idea of 12v but had resisted because an alternator clashes with the OEM look :) A 12v genny "looks" more original but I get the faster cranking...

Whichever round coil you use, orient it the same polarity as your battery.

If your battery is negative ground, use the - negative side of the coil to the points.

Thanks for the reply/advice(I was worried I made the wrong call).

It's a front mount w/the round coil conversion. It has a 6volt round coil so I can either put the resister back in; or get an inexpensive 12v coil(like the one you generously gave the part number for) and enjoy a hotter spark?

The electrode gap and compression in the cyl ultimately determines at what voltage is needed to jump the gap.. however.. the 12v coil with no extra resistor gives you the best chance for maximizing your -available- spark potential to make up for wear and corrosion in the system as you go.. vs the 6v coil and resistor that merely wastes power by converting it to heat and disipating it.

If this is a sidemount and has the oem 6v round coil, you can either put the resistor back in you had removed.. or get a 12v coil.. napa IC14SB

IMHO.. I'd keep the 12v genny and put a 12v battery in it, and polarize for negative ground.
