Some might recall, some may not. I had my Granpa's 1940 N shipped from Tx up to MD last Sept I think it was. I've been working on it off and on since then. It cost a chunk to ship it up here.... and I've put another good chunk into it. I'm sure I could have bought at least one pretty nice one or maybe two so so ones for what I've spent on it so far all told.

It's Granpa's though and that's why I've done it.

Anyway..... This past Monday night I got it fired up for the first time. It's bare bones atm... no sheet metal, and a gallon jug strapped on for a temp. fuel source.

It runs pretty good I think. I have about 25-30psi oil pressure at the gauge. Runs smooth in all gears.
I do have one immediate issue though. At time while running I'll barely hear. I'll shut it down and it'll end up being the starter spinning. At least that what it sounds like. It's not engaging the flywheel though. It's just spinning in place at high revs. I can take the button at my feet and jiggle it up and down and it will stop.

I figured the button out front of the dash was sticking or something. I pulled it out and worked it a bit. It seems to operate smoothly. Next I figured it could be the rod that goes from the foot button to the button out front. So while I had the front button off I reached in there with the handle of a screwdriver and pushed on the rod, while simultaneously pushing on the foot button. Back and forth I worked it. I lubed it and made sure there was nothing gunked up where it goes through that little inner wall. It seemed fine. Since I can get it to stop by jiggling the foot button I'm really thinking it has something to do with the button out front of the dash. It didn't have much resistance when I worked it while I had it removed. Could vibration be causing it? It boggles me though because like I said...it doesn't actually engage or even try to engage the flywheel when it happens. It's just spinning freely.

My other issue, though not so immediate, is my lift.
Last night I fired it up again and gave the lift a try..... . engaged the PTO, and it spun like the dickens. The lift rose nice & smooth.....up and up. It actually rose until the chains were taught and the lift arms were resting up against the under side of the axles. I wasn't quite expecting it to raise until it literally ran into something that manually stopped it.
Going down though was another issue. It flat out didn't want to budge. I shut off the PTO and shut down the N. I got around behind it and I could manually force the arms down by hand, though it was pretty dang rough.
Perhaps the control rod isn't engaged properly inside? might it improve with use????

I'll post some before & current photos when I get home...

have a good one folks.

I'm tall too. I actually don't use my foot; I reach down and use my hand. My Granpa is kinda short though and he'd usually use the heel of his left foot to do it.

You should be proud to have a good looker like that. I get really jazzed to see old iron being resurected, particularly one with a family history.

The rear rims & hubs need to be brushed for primer and paint but I'm not doing that until I have the rubber yanked.. will get them done when I do that, before the new rubber goes on.

need to drain the radiator again and swap the hoses for the new ones I have; forgot to do that. I need to find something to clean the exterior of the radiator too.... I haven't found anything that works too well.

hood, doglegs/headlights (NOT the same lights as in the before photos) , and fenders are all ready to be put back on. I blasted, primered & painted them. The seat, running boards, & "new to me" grill need to be blasted yet so I can get those primered & painted.

As for the button being closer to my feet than any other part of my body? If we are going that route.. i think it may need to be called a knee switch or something similar!

/shrug  cause it's closer to my foot then any other part of my body, and because all my life..... Granpa always pushed it with his foot

but yes.. the button on the trans cover.... at the base of the dash....

you understood what I was referring to though.... so it's all good.
