NASHVILLE -- Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like "Make the World Go Away" made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died Thursday morning, days short of his 90th birthday.

Arnold died at a care facility near Nashville, said Don Cusic, a professor at Belmont University and author of the biography "Eddy Arnold: I'll Hold You in My Heart." His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip.

Arnold's vocals on songs like the 1965 "Make the World Go Away," one of his many No. 1 country hits and a top 10 hit on the pop charts, made him one of the most successful country singers in history.

My Mom was a classmate of his at Chester County High School. Her family was poor by any measure as her dad lost his job as a Standard Oil Truck driver early on in the Depression. She said "the Arnolds'were the poorest of the poor".They lived at "Jacks Creek".Mom lived in Henderson and had the advantage of a "rich aunt"that drew a widows pension from her husbands Spanish American War service, she gave them her old clothes her mom would remake into clothes she could wear.Mom worked in the school cafeteria for her eats and leftovers to take home.At a class reunion in Memphis, maybe the 50th, Eddie gave her and the others a copy of his book,"This is a Long Way From Chester County".He told them that the title came from what he said to his wife as they walked up the steps into the White House as invited guests of the President.
